The Origins of 5Sos

The group formed in 2011 while the members were attending high school at Norwest Christian College. Their earliest music was a blend of a cover song or two and their own songs, all posted to Luke Hemmings' Youtube channel. The group quickly became YouTube celebrities, earning comparisons to the likes of Good Charlotte and All Time Low. Their earliest lineup consisted of guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and Hemmings – drummer Ashton Irwin joined in December of 2011. The group played their first show on December 3, 2011, at the Annandale hotel. The band's members have said that there were only 12 people in attendance at the concert. However, the group's following quickly started growing. They got signed by Sony/ATV Music Publishing early in their career and released Unplugged, their debut EP, shortly after. After Unplugged became a major commercial success, the group's members started collaborating with big names in the industry on writing what would become their debut album. Early collaborators included Christian Lo Russo of Amy Meredith, James Bourne of Busted, the members of McFly, Nick Hodgson of Kaiser Chiefs, and others.

Rising to International Fame

Since they made it big, the band has gone on to sell over two million concert tickets, sold more than 10 million copies of their albums, and topped the ARIA chart for eight consecutive weeks.  They've also won multiple iHeartRadio Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, a People's Choice Award, and numerous ARIA Awards. The band has continued gaining more and more traction over the last few years, releasing multiple best-selling albums, with the most recent being 2020's Calm
