Anne-Marie's Early Life

Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson was born to a schoolteacher mother and a construction worker father. The artist grew up in Essex with her parents and sister Samantha. Anne-Marie was involved in professional musical theater throughout her childhood, appearing in West End Productions of Les Miserables and Whistle Down the Wind. The future pop star became a black belt in Shotokan karate when she was a teenager, going on to win championships throughout Europe and the world. She has linked her skillfulness and discipline in karate to her success in the music industry.

Becoming a Star

Anne-Marie's first demo recording was created in 2013 for Rocket Records. Shortly after, she was tapped by Rudimental to replace one of their vocalists, who had departed from the group on short notice. Nicholson ended up providing vocals on several Rudimental songs for their album We the Generation.  In June 2015, Anne-Marie released her first EP, Karate, via Major Tom's and Asylum Records. The EP achieved mild success, but not nearly as much as her debut album, which would come out several years later.

Speak Your Mind Becomes a Success

On April 27, 2018, Anne-Marie released Speak Your Mind, her debut studio album, via Major Tom's, Asylum, and Atlantic Records. The album features production work by some of the biggest names in the industry, including David Guetta, Steve Mac, Fraser T Smith, Teddy Geiger, and others.  Several of the singles on Speak Your Mind were high-profile collaborations with other artists, including Guetta, Sean Paul, Marshmello, and Clean Bandit. The track "Rockabye," a collaboration with Sean Paul and Clean Bandit, was one of the most successful songs on the album. Released by Clean Bandit, the song became a UK Christmas number one hit upon its release in October 2016, and it was certified triple-Platinum in the United States.

Therapy

On July 23, 2021, Anne-Marie released her second full-length studio album, Therapy, via Major Tom's and Asylum. The record features four singles: "Kiss My (Uh-Oh)," "Our Song," "Don't Play," and "Uh-Oh." Tracks on the album include guest vocals from the likes of KSI, Little Mix, Niall Horan, Digital Farm Animals, and others. Critics praised Therapy after its release, with NME’s Ali Shutler describing it as not making “the same mistake” that the singer arguably made with her first album, which Shutler said was “Playing it too safe.” Ben Devlin from musicOMH described the record as “Packed to the brim with famous faces on vocals, songwriting, and production, but her relatable, unpretentious, sometimes playful delivery holds disparate sounds and moods together with ease.” Therapy reached number two in the UK, and Anne-Marie is scheduled to support the album's release with a tour in 2022.
