Biography

Andrew Bazzi, known professionally by just his surname, is a pop singer, songwriter, and record producer from Canton, Michigan. He first gained popularity thanks to the viral success of his October 2017 track “Mine,” which achieved meme status thanks to Musical.ly and Snapchat’s use of the song.

He relocated to Los Angeles in November 2014 to work on music at the end of high school, and he’s been living there since, continuing to make hits for a living. As an interesting part of his creative process, he claims that he freestyles most of his lyrics, which has led to some controversial tracks. He’s also collaborated with some big names, like Lil Wayne and Camilla Cabello.

Bazzi's Early Life

Songwriter Bazzi was born in Dearborn but grew up in Canton, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. He was born to Lebanese-American parents and learned to play the oud, a Middle Eastern instrument, at a young age. He played acoustic guitar and oud, but that wasn’t where his fascination with music ended—he was a natural performer. Bazzi speaks both Arabic and English. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Bazzi shared that he was always the center of attention growing up. He told the magazine’s Brittany Spanos about his constant desire to get a response from friends, peers, and teachers. That desire inspired Andrew to rap for anyone who would listen from a young age. “I was the biggest class clown,” he said, “I loved attention.”  Young Andrew was active on YouTube, where he frequently uploaded covers of songs that he liked. In his Rolling Stone interview, he reflected on this time of his life, saying, “I used to say, ‘I’m a fucking superstar’ when I was a weird kid who wanted to be like Justin Bieber. I was posting covers, and in my mind, I was a star.” In 2013, Andrew started uploading content to the video-sharing platform Vine. He quickly gained a following, amassing 1.5 million followers on the platform in just two years. In September of 2015, he became the first artist to be featured on Vine with his song "Bring You Home."  Some of Bazzi's musical influences are Michael Jackson, Guns N' Roses, Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin, and Duran Duran.

Breakthrough With "Mine"

In October of 2017, Andrew dropped "Mine," a song that would go on to kickstart his music career and break him into the mainstream. Just a few days after the song came out, he was scouted by an A&R rep from Warner Music's Artist Partner Group, who signed him alongside his songwriting partner Henry Fredrickson.  Mine reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit the top 10 on several other US charts. The song went 5x Platinum in the US, 3x Platinum in Australia, Gold in the United Kingdom, and 5x Platinum in Canada. After the track’s release, Rolling Stone did a piece highlighting Bazzi as an up-and-coming pop star to watch. The song also became a well-known meme in January of that year, appearing with Snapchat filters and overlaid lyrics.  After the success of "Mine," Bazzi went on to release several more successful tracks, including "Why?," "Gone," and "Honest." He was also a guest on Camila Cabello's North American Tour and is currently working on a song with superstar DJ Marshmello.

Cosmic

On April 12, 2018, Bazzi released his debut studio album via his imprint, iamcosmic, and Atlantic Records. The album features the single "Mine," as well as several others, including "Beautiful," featuring Camila Cabello. The album reached number 14 on the US Billboard 200, and it went Platinum in the United States and Silver in the UK.

Building a Career

Bazzi continued to gain momentum throughout the latter half of the 2010s. He opened for Justin Timberlake on the singer's Man of the Woods Tour, performing throughout Europe with Timberlake. Not long after, he was nominated for Best New Artist at the MTV VMAs.

Soul Searching

Bazzi's debut mixtape Soul Searching was released on August 9, 2019. The collection of songs includes the singles "Paradise," "Focus," and "I.F.L.Y.," and it features 6lack and 21 Savage.  Soul Searching went Gold in Canada and reached number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Bazzi’s Recent Work

Bazzi has released several new singles in the 2020s, including "Renee's Song," "I Got You," "I Don't Think I'm Okay," "Crazy," "I Like That," and "Young and Alive."

Bazzi's Personal Life

Bazzi is currently in a relationship with Renee Herbert, the titular Renee of his single "Renee's Song."  During the COVID-19 pandemic, the musician shared that he had been struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. Bazzi wrote an open letter to fans saying that he "let a drug problem get out of hand." However, the musician has since made efforts to get back on track and is continuing to release new music.
