​​Rebbeca Marie Gomez, better known as Becky G, is a singer from Inglewood, California. She scored her first hit with “Becky From the Block,” a song that samples Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” and got Becky plenty of attention in the pop world. After producer Dr. Luke helped Becky launch her music career, she got a deal with RCA Records and Kemosabe Records before releasing her debut EP, Play it Again, in 2013. 

Becky’s biggest hit yet, “Shower,” made it into the top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned a multi-Platinum certification after its release in April 2014. The song, produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut, earned the Premios Juventud Award for Favorite Hit and the Radio Disney Music Award for Catchiest New Song in 2015. 

Since the release of “Shower,” Becky has collaborated with the likes of Natti Natasha, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, and more, and toured with Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, and Jason Derulo.

Who Is Becky G? 

Rebbeca was born on March 2, 1997. Her parents are Alejandra and Francisco Gomez, and she is of Mexican descent – all four of her Grandparents hail from Jalisco, Mexico. Gomez is one of four children – she has two older brothers and one younger sister. At a very young age, Becky's family started going through financial struggles, and she began working part-time to support them. It was at just nine years old that she became determined to start a music career.  Becky endured bullying at a young age, but the cruelty of the kids around her didn't stop her.

Becky's Biggest Achievements in the Music Industry 

  • Now just 24 years old, Becky has already had two number-one hits on the Billboard Latin Airplay Charts. Those hits were the tracks "Mayores" and "Sin Pijama."
  • The singer has also launched a successful acting career, starring in the Power Rangers movie and playing a role in Empire
  • Some of Becky's high-profile collaborations include songs with Pitbull, Ozuna, Bad Bunny, ZAYN, Maluma, Natti Natasha, and other Spanish-speaking artists.

How Becky's Career Started 

After appearing in several films, Becky got her start in music as a member of the girl group G.L.A.M. Meanwhile, she began recording songs at home using GarageBand, singing and rapping covers of her favorite songs and posting them online.  Her early YouTube videos were subsequently discovered by The Jam, who produced Becky's covers of songs by Justin Bieber, Bad Meets Evil, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Drake. The production duo also produced her first original song, "Turn the Music Up," which was never released. 

"Becky From the Block" and More 

After her YouTube videos gained the attention of producer Dr. Luke, Becky had a guitar and vocal audition for the producer and was signed to his label, Kemosabe Records, in 2013.  She released her first single, "Becky from the Block," on April 23, 2013. The single's accompanying music video earned over 82 million views on YouTube. Becky was the song's sole songwriter.  After the track's release, Becky hit the ground running, going on to release another single, "Quiero Bailar (All Through the Night)," in September 2013. an accompanying music video based in Venice, California, was released on January 4, 2014. Before 2013 was over, Becky had released another single – "Built for This," which would later be featured on the tracklist for her debut EP.

Becky’s Further Success 

After kick-starting her career with help from Dr. Luke, Becky had a string of successes during the first half of the 2010s. She was featured on the song "Problem (The Monster Remix)" alongside Will.i.am for the movie Hotel Transylvania in 2012. Not long after, she collaborated with Michel Teló on a remix of "Ai Se Eu Te Pego," then appeared as a guest vocalist on a remix of Kesha's "Die Young'' with Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa.  "Shower," Becky's biggest hit to date, was released on April 23, 2014. The track became a massive success, leading to Becky becoming a spokesperson for CoverGirl. The latter half of the 2010s saw Becky take on a starring role in Power Rangers, get into a brief relationship with fellow star Austin Mahone, and release numerous highly successful singles. Some of her most popular songs from this era were "You Love It," "Can’t Stop Dancin'," "Break a Sweat," and "Sola." In 2016, Becky began a relationship with professional soccer player Sebastian Lletget.  In the late 2010s, Becky appeared in several more films and TV shows, all the while increasing her platform with a partnership with the makeup company ColourPop. She released her debut album, Mala Santa, in October 2019, which topped the charts in the U.S., Spain, and Mexico. She subsequently collaborated with the likes of Carlos Rivera, Ozuna, Tyga, Maluma, and others.  Becky has recently stayed in the spotlight through TV appearances and high-profile collaborations. She also has a podcast with Amazon Music, titled “En La Sala,” and she regularly uses her platform to speak on topics like Black Lives Matter. Her career is shaping up to be pretty iconic.
