As Benee, Stella has earned multiple awards throughout her relatively short career. She’s the recipient of the New Zealand Music Awards for Best Solo Artist, Best Pop Artist, and Single of the Year, all of which she’s won two years in a row. Benee's Childhood

New Zealand singer Stella Rose Bennett grew up in Grey Lynn, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. Her parents introduced her to the music of Radiohead, Groove Armada, Björk, and more, and she quickly started getting interested in music herself. Benee took guitar and saxophone lessons while in high school but eventually put music aside to focus on her other passion – water polo. She attended an all-girls Catholic school for several years called St. Mary's College. Eventually, Benee took up music again, starting to write songs at the age of 17. She left a promising water polo career behind and went on to pursue a communications degree from the Auckland University of Technology. During her last year of high school and early time in college, Benee started recording covers of her favorite songs and posting them to SoundCloud.  Benee's covers earned her the approval of Leisure member and record producer Joshua Fountain, who went on to produce her first singles – "Tough Guy" and "Soaked." These songs were later featured on her first EP.  "Soaked" went on to go Double-Platinum in Benee's homeland of New Zealand.

Breaking Through

After opening for Lily Allen in February 2019, Stella released her debut EP, Fire on Marzz, a collaboration with producer Josh Fountain, under the moniker of Bene. She subsequently added the second "e" to her name because "Bene" proved to be hard for fans to pronounce. Her second EP, Stella and Steve, was released in November 2019, and it earned Benee even more fans with its singles "Glitter," "Evil Spider," and "Find an Island." Around the time of the EP's release, Stella supported fellow viral star Conan Gray on his late 2019 North American tour.  Stella and Steve yielded several songs that gained international popularity on the video-sharing platform TikTok. The platform proved to be one of Benee's biggest assets, exposing her to hundreds of millions of listeners worldwide.

Making Hits During the Pandemic

Just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Benee was set to embark on a North American headlining tour with Remi Wolf. However, the tour had to be canceled as COVID cases continued to rise worldwide. Nevertheless, the isolation that the pandemic brought with it failed to slow down Benee's rise to greater degrees of stardom. During the pandemic, "Supalonely" continued to dominate the charts and was inescapable on TikTok. The song's accompanying music video hit 250 million views in June of 2020. That month, Benee and collaborator Gus Dapperton appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, along with The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Benee released the single "Snail" mid-lockdown in August of 2020. The single was just one of her many creative efforts during the pandemic – she also collaborated with Joji on his song "Afterthought," appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and released the July 2020 song "Night Garden" with Kenny Beats and Bakar.

Benee's Debut Album

In November 2020, Benee released her debut major-label studio album, Hey U X, via Republic Records. The album features production by Claire Boucher, AKA Grimes, Kenny Beats, Djeisan Suskov, Jonah Christian, and Joshua Fountain, and it includes guest appearances from Grimes, Mallrat, Bakar, Flo Milli, Lily Allen, and Gus Dapperton.  Benee has cited the song "Happen to Me" as her favorite track on her debut album. She told Songwriter Universe that that track holds a special place in her full-length solo debut. She said, "'Happen to Me' is a favorite because of how personal it is. It touches on anxiety and depression, which is something that I haven't explored much with my songwriting." Tracks on the album include "Sheesh," featuring Grimes, "Snail," "Kool," "Winter," featuring Mallrat, "All the Time," featuring Muroki, and more. In October 2020, around the time of Hey U X's release, Benee set out to found her own label, Olive. That same month, the singer was nominated for Best New Artist at the People's Choice Awards. She also received multiple nominations at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards, including Best Solo Artist, Single of the Year, and Best Pop Artist.
