  • Sean has a net worth of $26 million. Ever since his first album was released in 2011, he’s held his own as one of the biggest artists in the hip-hop genre.

He’s also received multiple MTV Video Music Awards. In 2012, just a year after the release of his debut album, Sean was nominated for Best New Artist at the BET awards.
  • Big Sean dated Naya Rivera, one of the stars of the show Glee, and the two were engaged. However, the couple broke off their engagement in 2014. Sean has also dated fellow musicians Ariana Grande and Jhene Eiko.

Big Sean’s Early Years

Big Sean was born Sean Michael-Leonard Anderson in Santa Monica, California, to parents Myra and James. His grandmother Mildred, who served as a captain in the United States Army in World War II, helped to raise him after he and his mother relocated to Detroit, Michigan. Mildred was one of the first black female captains in the US Army, making her a historic figure in her own right. Sean started taking an interest in hip-hop in high school. An excellent student and a big fan of rap, Sean started competing in a weekly rap battle held by WHTD, one of Detroit’s hip-hop radio stations. In the early 2000s, Sean found out that his hero, rapper Kanye West, was in Detroit for a radio interview. Hoping to gain some recognition for his own rap skills, Sean went to 102.7 FM’s station to meet West and rap for him. Kanye was impressed with Sean’s bars, and he signed him to his label, GOOD Music, in 2007. West is considered largely responsible for giving Sean his start in the rap world.

His Rise to Stardom

Sean’s first releases were mixtapes, which he released via GOOD Music. His first mixtape, Finally Famous: The Mixtape, featured the hit single, “Get’cha Some.” The song got Sean positive attention from the press, and a popular music video was later released for the track. His subsequent mixtape, UKNOWBIGSEAN, was released in 2009. The 30-track mixtape increased Sean’s popularity significantly, and he followed it with Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG in 2010. His third mixtape features collaborations with numerous rappers, including Asher Roth, Chiddy Bang, Tyga, Drake, and others.  Big Sean is often referred to as one of the forerunners of rap in the 2000s and 2010s. His frequent collaborations with other prominent rappers and his impressive flow have helped to make him a household name. In addition, he’s carved out a niche for himself by working with some of the best producers in the game. In addition to being well known for his frequent features on others’ songs, Sean also gained notoriety for his song “Control,” which featured Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica.  Sean’s career has been filled with milestones, from meeting Kanye West in 2005 to getting signed to the release of his debut album in 2011. The Detroit rapper was also featured on the Justin Bieber track, “As Long As You Love Me,” which further cemented him in pop culture history. The feature earned Sean his highest placement on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, hitting No. 6.

Big Sean’s Music

  • Sean’s debut, 2011’s Finally Famous, hit No. 3 on the Billboard album charts. The rapper scored three hit singles with the album – “My Last,” “Marvin & Chardonnay,” and “Dance (Ass).” As of 2017, the album was certified Platinum by the RIAA.
  • Big Sean followed up Finally Famous with a second hit album, Hall of Fame. The album hit the same spot on the charts that Finally Famous had peaked at – No. 3. Fans and critics alike praised the album, with many considering it even better than Sean’s debut. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA in 2017. Hall of Fame reunites Sean with Kanye, and the record also includes features from Ariana Grande, Ty Dolla Sign, and more.
  • For his third full-length release, Sean collaborated with Jhene Aiko for a Tidal exclusive record called TWENTY88. The album, which was released on April 1st, 2016, later became available on other streaming platforms. A companion short film, titled Out of Love, came out a few months later.
  • In February 2017, Big Sean released his fourth studio album, titled I Decided. The record was Sean’s first LP to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Just a few months after its release, the record was certified Gold by the RIAA, making it the fastest Big Sean record to reach Gold status.
