Biography

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell is a 19-year-old musician, singer, and songwriter from Los Angeles, California. Born on December 18, 2001, Billie has been making music since her early teens, constantly collaborating with her brother Finneas O’Connell.

Billie is the daughter of Patrick O’Connell and Maggie Baird, two actors and musicians. Her parents encouraged her and her brother to pursue music from an early age, and a large portion of their early music was recorded in their childhood bedrooms.

“Ocean Eyes,” Billie’s breakthrough single, was initially released on Soundcloud in 2015. A collaboration with her brother, the song became a viral hit and skyrocketed Billie to pop stardom. Since then, she’s released two albums, had more than one world tour, played at Coachella, and swept the Grammy Awards.

Billie has described her music as being influenced by rappers Tyler, the Creator and Childish Gambino, as well as pop stars Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift. She was raised on the music of bands like Linkin Park, Green Day, and The Beatles. Thanks to her horror-inspired image, some have labeled her the next Marilyn Manson and compared her visual style to Nine Inch Nails.

Billie’s Breakthrough

“Ocean Eyes” was originally written by Finneas O’Connell, who intended to release the song himself. However, he gave the song to Billie after Fred Diaz, Eilish’s dance teacher, encouraged the pair to write a song for a dance. On Spotify, “Ocean Eyes” has racked up hundreds of millions of streams, and it has millions more on other platforms. Remixes of the song were later released by Blackbear, Astronomyy, and other artists. After the song took Billie’s presence in the music industry to the next level, she quickly started racking up fans on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. The success of “Ocean Eyes” led to Billie getting signed by Interscope Records, with whom she released her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Singles and Don’t Smile at Me

Along with “Ocean Eyes,” Billie released an EP and several singles before moving on to drop her debut album. Some of her songs were only ever published on Soundcloud, including “Fingers Crossed,” a song inspired by The Walking Dead and the zombie apocalypse.  In 2017, Eilish dropped her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me. The EP was positively received by critics and made it to the top 20 on the North American album charts. Its tracklist features “Ocean Eyes,” as well as several other singles, including “Bellyache,” “My Boy,” and “Copycat.”

Eilish’s First Album

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was released on March 29, 2019, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Recorded at home and produced by Finneas O’Connell, the album features the smash-hit single “Bad Guy.”

“Bad Guy” Goes 6x-Platinum

“Bad Guy” was one of the most successful songs from When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. With super-catchy lyrics about being villainous (“I'm that bad type, make your mama sad type, make your girlfriend mad type, might seduce your dad type...I'm the bad guy”), the song became one of the most successful tracks of 2019.

Happier Than Ever: A Wildly Successful Follow-Up Album

On July 30, 2020, Billie released “My Future,” the first single for her second album, Happier Than Ever. Four more singles were released before the album dropped, including “NDA,” “Your Power,” “Lost Cause,” and “Therefore I Am.”  When the album came out on July 30, 2021, Billie once again made it to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Billie’s Personal Life

Eilish has been in several relationships since her early teens, most notably with rapper Brandon Adams, AKA 7:AMP. The couple split up in 2020, and she is currently with Matthew Tyler Vorce, who she’s been dating since early 2021. Billie is known for her unique style, which is characterized by baggy t-shirts and streetwear staples, as well as some horror and goth-inspired elements. She’s described her look as highly flexible, though, and expressed discontentment with being called “the creepy, weird, scary girl.” Eilish is currently estimated to have a net worth of $25 million, which is impressive for anyone – especially a 19-year-old. She drives a Dodge Challenger, a car that has appeared in several of her music videos. The car was a gift from Interscope Records on her 17th birthday. For much of her early career, Billie was seen as something of a teen icon. However, that’s a label that she’s recently worked hard to distance herself from. As a young adult, Billie has taken steps to showcase a more mature image, even posing in lingerie for the June 2021 edition of British Vogue
