How Camila Got Started in Music

Born in Cuba, Camila relocated to Miami, Florida, when she was just six years old. She grew up listening to classic Latin music, which inspired her to hone her skills as a singer.  Before she blew up as a solo artist, Camila was a member of Fifth Harmony from 2010 to 2016. She performed with the group alongside fellow singers Normani Kordei, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui after the five girls competed on The X Factor in 2012. The group was put together by Simon Cowell himself, who saw potential in the girls and wanted to see them succeed. Cabello did her audition on her own in Greensboro, North Carolina, and faced elimination during the boot camp portion. However, she was later paired with the rest of the girls.  Fifth Harmony competed as a group on The X Factor and finished in third place. Despite not taking home first, the group had still gained a loyal following from their time on the show. They went on to release their debut single, “Miss Movin’ On,” in 2013, a song that became the highest-charting song from X Factor contestants at the time.

Camila and Shawn Mendes Join Forces

Camila released her first song as a solo artist alongside Canadian singer Shawn Mendes. The track, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” was written while the two were backstage during Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour. The song came out in November 2015 and became a huge success.  Mendes and Cabello have since released another collaboration together, “Senorita,” which came out in June 2019. The track was even more popular than their first duet, making it to number 2 on the Hot 100 in the US and earning a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys.

Leaving Fifth Harmony

When Camila announced her departure from Fifth Harmony in 2016, it was already clear that big things were ahead. That October, she co-released “Bad Things,” a single featuring Machine Gun Kelly. In February 2016, she collaborated with Cashmere Cat on the song “Love Incredible,” another successful solo single. When The Fate of the Furious came out in late 2016, Camila was featured on the soundtrack for the film alongside fellow Latin stars Pitbull and J Balvin. The song “Hey Ma” from The Fate of the Furious: The Album became a big success as well. The single was released in Spanish in march 2017 and in English in April of the same year.

Camila’s First Solo Album

Camila, Cabello’s eponymous debut album, was released in January 2018, preceded by the hit single “Crying in the Club,” which was co-written by Sia. Her singles “Havana,” “Real Friends,” and “Never Be The Same” appeared on the album, helping it reach the top of the charts in the US. “Never Be the Same” is one of Camila’s more unique collaborations – it features country star Kane Brown.  After Camila came out and became a huge success, Camila was nominated for two Grammys – Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. She went on to support the album’s release by appearing as a musical guest on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she played “Havana” with support from The Roots.

Romance: A Hit Follow-Up Record

In December 2019, Cabello dropped Romance, her second full-length album as a solo artist, via Epic Records. The record was made with help from the likes of Finneas O’Connell, Andrew Watt, and more, and features “Liar,” “Shameless,” “Living Proof,” and Camila’s second collaboration with Shawn Mendes, “Senorita.” One of the most successful tracks from the album is “My Oh My,” a track that features DaBaby and Gunna.

Scoring Another Hit With “South of the Border”

In July 2019, Camila released “South of the Border,” a collaboration with English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and Dominican-American rapper Cardi B. The song was released as part of Sheeran’s No. 6 collaborations Project, a feature-laden album that also includes appearances from Justin Bieber, Travis Scott, 50 Cent, Skrillex, and many more. “South of the Border” went on to go Gold in the United States and Platinum in several other countries, including the UK. It became one of Camila’s biggest hits to date.  Camila’s most recent release is “Don’t Go Yet,” a single that dropped on July 23, 2021.
