Charlie Puth’s Early Life

Puth was born to Debra and Charles Otto Puth. His father is a builder and real estate agent, and his mother is a music teacher. Charlie has roots in both the Catholic and Jewish faiths, thanks to his mother and father’s backgrounds. One question often raised about Puth’s appearance is in regards to the scar on his right eyebrow. At just two years old, Charlie was attacked by a dog, which led to permanent scarring above his eye.  From a young age, Puth took to studying jazz, going on to attend Manhattan School of Music Pre-College, where he focused on jazz piano and classical studies. After graduating from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010, Charlie went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he double-majored in music production and engineering.

Puth’s Music

Here’s everything you need to know about Charlie’s music, from his debut single to today.

Puth’s Initial Exposure

In 2009, Charlie started posting content on YouTube. He released several original songs and videos on the platform before competing in Perez Hilton’s Can You Sing? Competition, which he won.  After taking home first in the competition and gaining exposure through the viral success of his song videos, Puth went on to release several more successful tracks online, including collaborations with singer Emily Luther. In 2011, after Charlie and Emily appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Ellen signed Charlie to her label.  In December 2012, Puth released the song “Break Again” via Ellen’s eleveneleven label, which was accompanied by a music video. However, it wasn’t long before Puth left the label to continue working independently.

Signing to Atlantic

Charlie landed a deal with Atlantic Records in the first quarter of 2015 and went on to release his debut studio single shortly after – The R&B-inspired track “Marvin Gaye.” The song features singer Meghan Trainor, and its lyrics call back to the titular star’s song “Let’s Get It On.” “Marvin Gaye” went on to go double Platinum in Australia and made it on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. After the success of Marvin Gaye, Puth made waves with the song “See You Again,” a collaboration with Wiz Khalifa for the soundtrack of Furious 7. The song became a number-one hit in the US and was nominated for several Grammys, including Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. 2015 kept on getting better for Puth after his success early in the year. He did production work for Trey Songz on the song “Slow Motion,” a song that was a major success. In June of 2015, he released the song “Nothing But Trouble” with Lil Wayne and later co-wrote and produced several songs for Jason Derulo. In August 2015, Charlie appeared on Maroon 5’s TV series Sugar, an 8-episode surprise concert show. Throughout the series, artists took fans by surprise, performing impromptu shows just for them. Charlie appeared in the show’s fifth episode, playing a concert for a fan on her 17th birthday.

Nine Track Mind

In January 2016, Puth released his debut album, Nine Track Mind. Distributed by Atlantic Records, the album made it to number 6 on the Billboard 200. Nine Track Mind features several hit singles, including “Marvin Gaye,” “One Call Away,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” and “Dangerously.” Guest appearances on the record include Selena Gomez, Meghan Trainor, and Shy Carter.

Voicenotes and Beyond

In May 2018, Charlie released his sophomore studio record, Voicenotes, via Atlantic. The album features the hit single “Attention,” which has gone on to become one of Puth’s most successful songs to date.  Other singles from the record include “Done for Me,” which features Kehlani, “Change,” featuring James Taylor, “How Long,” and “The Way I Am.” Prior to the album’s release, Puth dropped the promotional single “If You Leave Me Now,” which features Boyz II Men, adding to the artist’s impressive guest list for his discography. After the release of the record, Puth performed “Change” at the March for Our Lives demonstration in Los Angeles, an event in support of gun control legislation. In recent years, Puth has continued releasing music and hinting that he may be releasing a third album soon. His most recent releases include collaborations with Elton John, Sasha Alex Sloan, and Gabby Barrett.
