Chris Stapleton’s Bio

Chris was born to Carol and Herbert Stapleton in Lexington, Kentucky. Carol was a public health worker and Herbert was a coal miner. Coal mining was the family trade for the Stapletons – but Chris was never drawn to that line of work. He grew up playing football and did well academically, even becoming the class salutatorian. After high school, he decided to go to Vanderbilt University, a prestigious school in Nashville, TN. However, it wasn’t long before he dropped out to pursue music. Stapleton officially moved to Nashville in 2001, and he was signed to Sea Gayle Music shortly after. He continued writing and performing throughout the 2000s, collaborating with the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers until 2010. That year, Stapleton formed The Jompson Brothers with Greg McKee, J.T. Cure, and Bard McNamee.  The Jompson Brothers enjoyed minor success, but Stapleton ended up departing from the band when he got signed to Mercury Nashville in 2013. That year, the country artist released his first single, “What Are You Listening To?”  In the early 2010s, Chris worked as a songwriter, collaborating with Vince Gill, Al Anderson, and other notable names in the Nashville music scene. Stapleton has worked on songs that have been featured in numerous films, including the 2016 neo-Western Hell or High Water

Traveller and Mainstream Success

In 2015, Stapleton released his debut full-length album, Traveller, via Mercury Nashville. The album features some of the best session musicians that Nashville has to offer, as well as Stapleton’s wife singing background vocals. The album, which was inspired by the passing of Stapleton’s father in 2013, was produced by six-time Grammy award winner Dave Cobb. Traveller became a massive success, going on to win the Grammy for album of the year. The record was also certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA, who awarded Stapleton several other honors as well – Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance. After the release of Traveller, Stapleton went on to collaborate with pop star Justin Timberlake on his 2018 album Man of the Woods. The country-inspired album featured “Say Something,” a song that featured vocals from Stapleton. The song hit the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Starting Over

In 2020, Stapleton released the long-awaited Starting Over. Another collaboration with producer Dave Cobb, the album went on to receive universal acclaim, with several music outlets giving the record five-star reviews. The record yielded two singles – ”Starting Over” and “You Should Probably Leave,” and was the follow-up to Stapleton’s From A Room records. Starting Over peaked at No. 1 on the US Top Country Albums chart and No. 3 on the US Billboard 200, making it a massive commercial and critical success. The record sold 103,000 copies in the first week after its release.   Sources: 'Traveller' by Chris Stapleton Review | WSJ Starting Over by Chris Stapleton Reviews and Tracks | Metacritic Chris Stapleton's 'Starting Over' Is a Forward-Looking Throwback | Rolling Stone
