Drake's Origins

Drake is a Toronto, Ontario native. He was born there on October 24, 1986, to Dennis and Sandy Graham. His parents divorced when he was young, and he ended up primarily living with his mother for the rest of his childhood and adolescence.

Finding Fame on Degrassi

Before he was Drake, Aubrey was best known for playing Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi: The Next Generation. However, the star wasn't always a fan of the direction that the show took with his character.  Jimmy was shot and confined to a wheelchair in the show's fourth season, a plot decision that caused Aubrey to threaten to quit. Aubrey allegedly threatened legal action at one point because he didn't want Jimmy's story to end with him in a wheelchair. Drake was especially frustrated with the fact that one of the few black characters on the show had faced such unfortunate circumstances.

Drake's Rap Career Takes Off

Back in 2007, before Drake was even signed, he had had a music video featured on BET. That same year, he sampled "Man of the Year" by Brisco, Flo Rida, and Lil Wayne, the latter of whom loved Drake's use of the song. Lil Wayne ended up inviting Drake to open for him in Houston on the Tha Carter III tour. Not long after he toured with Lil Wayne, Drake was signed to Wayne's label, Young Money Records. His first album's release followed shortly after in 2010.
