Facts About Dua Lipa’s Early Music

  • Dua Lipa has described herself as being influenced by Kylie Minogue, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani, Chance the Rapper, and others.
  • Dua knew that Warner Bros. Records didn’t have a female artist who was topping the charts on their roster, so she set out to fill that role. In August of 2015, she released her first single, “New Love,” a track produced by Emilie Haynie and Andrew Wyatt, and the track became a hit.
  • After the success of her first single, Lipa went on to put out several more throughout 2015 and 2016. Her next singles included “Last Dance” in February 2016, “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” in August 2016, and “Scared to Be Lonely,” a collaboration with producer Martin Garrix.

Touring and a Successful Debut

  • In January 2016, Dua Lipa started her first tour of Europe, playing shows until November of that year.
  • In November of the same year, The Fader released See in Blue, a documentary about Dua Lipa that chronicled the singer’s rise to stardom.
  • In June 2017, Dua released her first studio album, which was met with widespread acclaim. The eponymous debut album yielded the single “New Rules,” which hit number two in Australia, number six in the US, and number one in the UK.
  • “IDGAF,” another single from the self-titled album, made it onto the UK singles chart and made it to Number 3. Lipa later performed the song on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “IDGAF” was also remixed to feature American rapper Saweetie.
  • Dua Lipa swept the Grammys and the Brit Awards, with Dua taking home the Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.
  • After receiving multiple Grammy nominations, Dua finally got a win in 2019 when she took home the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording.

2018 and Onward

  • In April 2018, Dua partnered with Calvin Harris to release “One Kiss,” another number-one hit in the UK. The song spent the most time at the top of the charts by a female artist in 2018, and it went on to take home the 2019 Brit Award for Song of the Year.

Future Nostalgia

  • After the success of “One Kiss,” Dua started building up anticipation for her second album, announcing it in December of 2019. The lead single for the record, “Don’t Start Now,” was released in January 2019 and made it to number two in the US and the UK.
  • Following “Don’t Start Now” came “Physical,” the second single released ahead of Future Nostalgia. Four more singles came out after “Physical” before the album dropped – “Break My Heart” in March 2020, “Hallucinate” in July, “Levitating” in October,” and “Love Again” in March. The album was released on March 27, 2020.
  • Future Nostalgia earned award nominations in several categories, including a Grammy nod for Album of the Year and a win for Best Pop Vocal Album.
  • After Future Nostalgia came out, the English singer dropped Club Future Nostalgia, a collection of remixes of songs from the album. The record features a remix of “Levitating” by The Blessed Madonna that includes guest vocals from Madonna and Missy Elliot.
  • In August 2020, Dua announced via social media that she had become the spokeswoman for Evian Water.
