Biography

On February 17, 1991, Edward Christopher Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Since 2004, the now-30-year-old English singer-songwriter has been releasing music under his own name, creating a unique blend of pop, folk, and rap.

He’s known for his guitar skills – especially for his unique percussive style of playing and use of a looping device – his knack for catchy hooks, and his vulnerable but radio-ready lyricism.

Sheeran had his big break in the early 2010s when he released Loose Change, his first EP. The collection of songs featured “The A Team,” his debut single, which became a massive worldwide hit. The track went on to be certified 5x Platinum in the US and 4x Platinum in the UK. “The A Team” was eventually nominated at the Grammy Awards for Song of The Year, and the follow-up debut album, +, was a huge success.

Since the release of “The A Team” in June of 2011, Sheeran has been on a streak of rapidly increasing success.

Ed’s Musical Beginnings

As a kid, the red-headed superstar always had a knack for music. By the time Ed Sheeran was four years old, he was singing in his church’s choir. At eleven, he started playing guitar, going on to write songs throughout high school.  Ed’s signature acoustic guitar style started to form long before he was a star. In 2008, he relocated to London from his hometown of Halifax and went on to play gigs around the city. In 2009, Ed started college at the Academy of Contemporary Music, where he continued honing his skills as a guitarist and songwriter. However, Sheeran wasn’t in college for long. After being invited on tour in support of British rapper Just Jack, Ed quit school and started pursuing music full-time.  At this point, Ed started making a name for himself in the industry – and fast. This time of Ed’s life was full of musical collaborations, including with the likes of Wiley, Jme, Sway, Amy Wadge, and other English artists.

Getting Signed and Early Success

After releasing a feature-laden EP, No. 5 Collaborations Project, in January 2011, Ed made it to number 2 on the iTunes charts completely independently. That success got him the attention of Asylum Records, who signed him for his first album.

In 2011, Ed released +, his debut studio album, which was met with rave reviews. The album features the single “Lego House,” which was accompanied by a wildly successful music video starring Rupert Grint.  After the release of the album, Ed took home multiple Brit Awards, including British Male Solo Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year.  At this point, Ed had already gained the attention of some of the biggest artists in the world, including Sir Elton John. Many fans started looking to Ed to be something of a successor to Elton John, and the two have since become friends.

x: A Massively Successful Follow-Up Record

In June 2014, Ed released x, his second studio album. The record was a collaborative effort between Ed and some of the most influential producers in the world – Rick Rubin, Pharrell, Benny Blanco (a frequent collaborator of Justin Bieber), Jeff Bhasker, and others all have production credits on x.  The album features the single “Thinking Out Loud,” which went on to become one of the singer’s biggest hits. The song has since been certified 12x Platinum in the United States.

Sheeran’s Recent Releases and Accolades

Ed is the winner of numerous music awards, and he’s been nominated for countless others.  In 2016, Ed was nominated as a featured artist for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. The nod came thanks to his collaboration with The Weeknd on his record, Beauty Behind the Madness. The next year, Sheeran was nominated for Song of the Year as a songwriter for Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.” In early January 2017, Ed released “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You,” the first two singles from his third album, Divide. Three more singles were released for the record – “Galway Girl,” “Perfect,’ and “Happier.” The album became the best-selling record worldwide in 2017. After the release of his third studio album, Ed toured throughout the US with the acclaimed American band Snow Patrol. Ed is currently gearing up for the release of his new album, =, on October 29, 2021. The album features the singles “Bad Habits” and “Shivers,” released in June and September, respectively.
