Farruko is the stage name of Carlos Efren Reyes Rosado, born on May 2, 1991 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The 30-year-old singer-songwriter is known for blending the genres of reggaeton, rap, Spanish dancehall, and Latin trap, as well as for high-profile collaborations with Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Ky-Mani Marley, and other notable Latin artists.

Facts About Farruko’s Early Career

Farruko got started in music in 2009 thanks to the Internet – he released his first single on Myspace. He gained a decent-sized fanbase on the social media platform. He gives Myspace credit for helping him break into the mainstream and catch the attention of music industry executives. His first single was “Sexo Fuera del Planeta,” a track that earned him a large following online. After the release of this track, the vocal talents of the Latin pop singer were tapped by several music execs to appear on other artists’ recordings. Farruko's debut album, El Talento del Bloque, came out when he was only 18 years old. The record was put out via Siente Music with distribution from Universal Music Group. El Talento del Bloque features several collaborative songs with big-name Latin stars, including “Traime a Tu Amiga” with Julio Voltio and Arcangel.” The track “Ella No Es Facil,” featuring Cosculluela, became a hit, as did “Su Hija Me Gusta” with José Feliciano. Soon after came “Pa Romper La Discoteca.” After the release of his first album, Farruko scored a hit when he collaborated with Daddy Yankee and Yomo on the single “Pa’ Romper la Discoteca.” The Puerto Rican singer started to become known for electro-pop just as much as his reggaeton music, especially thanks to guest appearances on songs by other artists.

Farruko’s Second and Third Albums

Farruko’s second album, TMPR: The Most Powerful Rookie, is the record that introduced electro-pop into his sound. The album features the single “Feel The Rhythm (Siente el Ritmo),” as well as four other tracks that were released in advance of the record. In 2014, Farruko released Farruko Presenta Los Menores, an album that features collaborations with Nicky Jam, J Balvin, Luigi 21+, and Ozi, as well as American rapper Sean Paul.  Some of the most successful tracks on Los Menores were “Passion Whine,” “Interesada,” “6 AM,” “No Soy,” and “Menor.” However, the biggest hit from the album was “Salgo,” which features Arcangel, Ñengo Flow, D. Ozi, and Genio y Kelmitt. In 2015, The song “6 AM” with J Balvin earned Farruko a Premios Juventud award, as well as the Latin Grammy awards for Best Urban Song and Best Urban Performance.

Recent Releases 

In February of 2015, Farruko released “Lejos de Aqui,” a remix track that features Yandel. In June, the singer followed up that single with “Adios,” a collaboration with Alejandra Guzman. The following month, Farruko collaborated with Nicky Jam and Shaggy on “Sunset,” a song that made it to the top of the Latin charts in several countries. “Sunset” was later featured on Visionary, Farruko’s fourth studio album. The record features tracks like “Obsesionado,” “Chillax,” “Te Va a Doler,” and more.

TrapXficante and Gangalee 

  • After the release of Visionary, Farruko climbed to massive success with the remix of his track “Krippy Kush,” which features Ocasio, Rvssian, 21 Savage, and Nicki Minaj. The single was later featured on the album TrapXficante, which came out in 2018.
  • TrapXFicante was followed by Gangalee, a record that has stayed at the top of the Latin charts for several years since its release. Featuring tracks like “Calma,” “Coolant,” and “Murder She Wrote,” the album earned praise from critics.
  • Gangalee features guest vocals from Anuel AA, Bryant Myers, Alicia Keys, J Balvin, and several others.

Farruko in the 2020s 

  • After Gangalee came out in 2019, Farruko dropped the single “En Letra de Otro,” which was featured on an HBO series of the same name.
  • Farruko has embarked on multiple tours through the US and Latin America, with the most recent being the Gangalee Tour in 2019. Nearly all of his releases have been accompanied by a tour, including 2015’s Los Menores Tour Bus, the 2016 Visionary World Tour, and the 2013 El Imperio Nazza Farruko Edition Tour. 
  • The singer’s most recent release came out on June 24, 2021. “Pepas,” a single, is accompanied by a music video that has earned over 130 views on YouTube. The song has a distinctly tribal feel.

Farruko’s Arrest Explained

On April 3, 2018, Farruko was arrested in his home country of Puerto Rico. He was accused of smuggling cash into the country when he returned home from the Dominican Republic – the authorities alleged that he had stashed the cash in his luggage and shoes. After the arrest, he was on probation for three years. Before his arrest, Farruko had an estimated net worth of approximately $3 million.
