Biography

Check out the story of Fireboy DML, a Nigerian singer/songwriter who has found great international success. Fireboy DML’s real name is Adedamola Adefolahan. He was born in Ogun State on February 5th, 1996.

Fast Facts About Fireboy DML

  • Fireboy DML was raised in Abeokuta, the state capital of Ogun State in southwest Nigeria. Early in his life, he started developing a passion for music, a spark that was initially lit by his time singing in his church choir.
  • Adedamola studied at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, where he continued to fall in love with music. He released his debut single, “Jealous,” during his college years after signing to YNBL Nation, a label founded by fellow Nigerian musician Olamide.
  • Fireboy is the oldest child of three – his younger siblings are all boys. However, the rest of the details about his family life are relatively private. At just 25 years old, the singer has yet to get married or start a family of his own.
  • Adedamola got his Bachelor of Arts in college, starting a legacy that didn’t necessarily run in his blood. He has said that he didn’t come from a musical family, but that he learned how to sing at an early age. However, it wasn’t until college that Fireboy started pursuing music as a career and a passion.
  • Fireboy’s first creative efforts were as a poet. He soon learned that he had a knack for writing song lyrics, a skill that he used to earn some money and, eventually, start his own solo career.
  • Early in his career, Fireboy got his foot in the door by writing songs for small sums of money. He told Legit, “I wrote [songs] for people, some for N30k, others for N50k. Songs that I regret selling, but it is part of the process.”
  • Fireboy had to take his time while making a name for himself in the music scene. He was a relatively unknown newcomer when he dropped “Jealous” shortly after getting signed, but it wasn’t long before people started paying attention to his talent.

A Few More Facts

In American dollars, Fireboy DML’s net worth is estimated to be approximately $850,000. In January 2020, Fireboy DML was made the face of Apple Music’s “Africa Now Playlist,” a compilation of music from numerous artists from the continent. Fireboy is known as the pioneer of the genre afro-life, which he describes as a distinct form of afrobeat music that includes elements of R&B, pop, and other genres.

Fireboy DML: The Music

Fireboy has cited Passenger and Jon Bellion as two of his biggest musical influences. Both of these artists are not Nigerian, but Fireboy quickly acquired a taste for internationally-charting pop music, which started to influence his own creative process.  In an interview with Legit, Fireboy acknowledged that Celine Dion and Elton John were two other artists that helped him find his sound. He said, “My dad was always playing Celine Dion and my mum always played [Nigerian artists] Yinka Ayefele and Tope Alabi. Those influences made me realize how beautiful music is.” While in college, Fireboy started playing shows on campus, gaining a following among the student body at his university. After the release of his debut single, “Jealous,” he went on to put out a follow-up, “What If I Say,” a romantic pop-R&B track, which was later featured on his debut album.

First Full-Length Album

In 2019, Fireboy released his debut full-length album, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps. The record was released via YBNL Nation and features only the artist with no guest appearances. Production on the record was handled by Olamide Adedeji, the YBNL label head, as well as several others. The album has been described as a blend of afro-life and R&B.  Laughter yielded three singles – Fireboy’s first two tracks, as well as “King,” which came out on August 1, 2019.” Several of the other tracks on the album explore elements of various genres, including singer-songwriter guitar-driven tracks like “Need You” and the chant-based, drum-heavy production on “Energy.” Elements of Afrobeat music are also prominently featured throughout. Fireboy DML’s debut album features 13 tracks – but all of them were recorded in a period of just five days. The artist worked long and hard to prepare the tracks before getting in the studio, but he wasted no time on recording sessions once the material was fully written. After its release, LTG was met with highly positive reviews from critics in the Nigerian music scene. Tooxclusive gave the album a 9 out of 10 review, commenting on the excellent balance between soulful and party-ready tracks.

Summary

Now widely considered to be one of Nigeria’s greatest active musicians, Fireboy DML is a prolific artist with significant success under his belt already. He has amassed nearly a million monthly listeners on Spotify thanks to tracks like “Jealous,” “Vibration,” “Like I Do,” and many others. He also released a follow-up album, APOLLO, in 2020.
