Future's Early Life

Before he was Future, Wilburn was just a kid living in Atlanta. Born on November 20, 1983, the 37-year-old rapper first started calling himself "The Future" after joining The Dungeon Family alongside his cousin Rico Wade.  After graduating from Columbia High School, Future received musical instruction from Atlanta rapper Rocko, who got him in the studio and signed him to his personal label, A1 Recordings. 

Getting Into Rap 

With the help of Rocko and A1, Future released several mixtapes in 2010 and 2011, including 1000, Dirty Sprite, and True Story. True Story features "Tony Montana," an early track in Future's discography that got its name from the lead character in Scarface. In the early 2010s, the rapper collaborated with Gucci Mane, with the two releasing an album together called Free Bricks. Afterward, Future was featured on YC's track "Racks," which further established him as a rising star in the Atlanta rap scene.

Future's Major Label Debut 

In September of 2011, Future got signed by Epic Records, then went on to release Streetz Calling, another mixtape. This collection of songs was followed by Astronaut Status, his ninth mixtape, which features Young Jeezy, Ludacris, and others.  With nine mixtapes under his belt, Future released Pluto, his debut studio album, on April 17, 2012. The album features some of the biggest names in rap and R&B, including R. Kelly, Drake, T.I., Snoop Dogg, and Trae tha Truth. 

Honest and Monster 

After Pluto came Honest, Future's second studio album, which was released on April 22, 2014, via Epic Records. The album features Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, Kanye West, Drake, Andre 3000, and several others.  It reached number two on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Gold by the RIAA. In October 2014, Future released his thirteenth mixtape, Monster, via Freebandz. The mixtape was executive produced by Metro Boomin, and it features the singles "Monster" and "Fuck Up Some Commas."

Beast Mode and 56 Nights 

On January 15, 2015, Future came out with Beast Mode, his fourteenth mixtape. A collaboration with producer Zaytoven, the mixtape was followed up with a sequel, Beast Mode 2, on July 6, 2018.  After Beast Mode came 56 Nights, a collaborative mixtape between Future and DJ Esco. The album was produced by 808 Mafia, with Southside handling executive production. 

DS2 and the Late 2010s

Future's third studio album, Dirty Sprite 2 (DS2), was released on July 17, 2015, via Epic Records. The album received praise from critics, with some considering it one of the best albums of 2015. After the release of DS2, Future collaborated with Drake on What a Time to Be Alive, a commercial mixtape best known for its single "Jumpman." The mixtape was a huge success, earning a Platinum certification in the United States.  Purple Reign, Future's sixteenth mixtape, was released on January 17, 2016, via Freebandz. The mixtape dropped less than a month before Future's fourth studio album, Evol.

Evol and More

Future's fourth album came out on February 6, 2016, via Epic. The album premiered through DJ Khaled's We The Best Radio station on Beats 1, and it was supported by two singles – "Low Life" and "Wicked."  Evol was a commercial success, making it to the top of US album charts, as well as the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. On February 17, 2017, just over a year after Evol, Future dropped his self-titled fifth studio album after announcing it on Instagram just three days earlier. The biggest hit from the project was the remix of "Mask Off," which features Compton rapper, Kendrick Lamar.  Future was followed by Hndrxx, a record that made Future the first artist to put out two chart-topping albums in consecutive weeks. The album includes collaborations with Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, and Chris Brown. 

Superfly

On June 8, 2018, Future's soundtrack for the movie Superfly was released. The album features a wide array of musical guests, including Yung Bans, Lil Wayne, Khalid, Ty Dolla Sign, Miguel, and others. It reached number three on the US Soundtrack albums charts.

Black Panther, Save Me, and More

In February 2019, Future won his first Grammy Award. The honor was shared with Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and Jay Rock for the song "King's Dead." The foursome received the Grammy for Best Rap Performance for the song, which was featured on the soundtrack to Black Panther.​​​​ Future's next project was Save Me, his debut solo EP. The EP made it to number five on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.  The rapper's eighth studio album, High Off Life, dropped on May 15, 2020. featuring Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Meek Mill, DaBaby, and other big names, the album debuted at the top of the US Albums chart.  High Off Life features the singles"Life Is Good," "Trillionaire," "100 Shooters," "Last Name," and "Tycoon." As for his future plans, we’ll just have to wait and see what he does with his expertise.
