Pink Guy

  • Before he was Joji, George Miller was better known as “Filthy Frank,” also known as “Pink Guy.” On his YouTube channel, TVFilthyFrank, Miller created meta, highly chaotic content spoofing the popular vlog format. Miller described his Filthy Frank character as the “anti vlogger of YouTube.” His persona is intense, and many of Miller’s videos are filled with his high-energy in-character antics.
  • Miller loves to get meta – his alter ego even has an alter ego. The character “Pink Guy” frequently made appearances on TVFilthyFrank. Pink Guy was Miller dressed in a pink bodysuit, and the erratic character frequently screamed in public, scared and embarrassed strangers, and performed comedic rap.
  • As Pink Guy, Miller also came up with the original “Harlem Shake” viral dance video. In the video, Miller – dressed as Pink Guy – danced with a group of other costumed characters, going wild after the drop in Baauer’s signature song. The video now has over 60 million views on YouTube, and it spawned a viral phenomenon.
  • Miller also released music as Pink Guy. His album Pink Season hit number 70 on the Billboard 200. The record features songs written by Miller, who maintains the chaotic Pink Guy persona throughout the course of the album. The topics of the lyrics range from Pink Guy’s interest in rice balls and ramen to his praise of adult content involving tentacles.
  • Joji and Pink Guy coexisted for several years, with Miller using his Joji project as a more serious creative outlet. Eventually, Miller retired Pink Guy and Filthy Frank to solely pursue a career as Joji.

Joji: The Music

  • Joji’s debut EP, 2017’s In Tongues, has been described as a combination of lo-fi beats, R&B elements, and highly emotional lyrics. Early releases from the record were leaked on the internet before the album’s release, a fact that Miller was not a fan of.
  • After his songs were leaked, Joji began releasing content more publicly via Soundcloud, a popular streaming platform used by independent artists. At this point, the artist was still putting out music as Pink Guy. The second and final Pink Guy album, Pink Season, was released not long before Miller retired the character entirely to focus on Joji.
  • Having retired Pink Guy, Miller started releasing more tracks on Soundcloud, building up the anticipation for the official release of In Tongues. The first non-Soundcloud release from Joji, “Will He,” served as the lead single for In Tongues. The track was met with a great deal of buzz from Miller’s legion of devoted fans, many of whom were ready to support his new project.

Ballads 1

Joji followed In Tongues with Ballads 1, his debut studio album. The record features the singles “Slow Dancing in the Dark,” “Yeah Right,” “Can’t Get Over You,” and “Test Drive,” all of which helped Joji spend more time on the charts. The full album, produced by Joji and a wide array of other musicians, peaked at No. 3 on the US album chart and hit No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Ballads 1 was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA, and many critics in the realms of rap and R&B gave Joji’s debut album highly favorable reviews. RIFF magazine described the record as sonically diverse, saying that it featured an “array of soundscapes.”

Nectar

Joji’s sophomore album, 2020’s Nectar, was highly anticipated by fans in the months leading to its release. The record, released via 88rising and 12Tone, features the singles “Sanctuary,” “Run,” “Gimme Love,” “Daylight,” and “Your Man.”  On Nectar, Joji collaborated with a number of high-profile musicians and producers, including Yves Tumor, Jim-E Stack, Diplo, Greg Kurstin, Omar Apollo, Lil Yachty, Benee, and several others. AllMusic awarded Nectar four stars out of five, describing the album’s instrumentals as “gorgeous” and “heartbreaking.”   Sources: The Man Behind Pink Guy’s Bizarre Chart-Topping Album ‘Pink Season’ | Complex How the Harlem Shake went from viral sideshow to global phenomenon | The Verge Joji | Biography, Albums, Streaming Links | All Music
