Justin Bieber’s Early Years

Born on March 1st, 1994, Justin grew up in Ontario, where he was raised by his mom, Pattie Mallette. As a kid, Bieber learned to play several instruments, including drums, piano, guitar, and trumpet. He was a talented singer from an early age as well and took home second place at a singing competition in Stratford, Ontario, when he was just 12 years old.  After placing in the top three at the Stratford competition, Justin started uploading videos of cover songs to YouTube, building up a loyal following on the site. Meanwhile, he took to busking in front of a local theater, gaining the attention of passersby in his hometown.

Justin Gets Discovered

When Justin was just 13 years old, one of his YouTube videos caught the attention of music exec Scooter Braun, who loved Justin’s voice. Shortly after Scooter got into contact with Bieber, Justin traveled with him to Atlanta to start working on music in the studio.

Signed to Island and A Smash-Hit Debut Single

Scooter and pop superstar Usher signed Justin to RBMG, the pair’s own label. Scooter and Usher later got Justin a deal with the massive label Island Records, his home for the release of his debut single, “One Time.” The track went on to be certified 5x Platinum in the United States. After the release of “One Time,” Justin appeared as a musical guest on numerous talk shows, including The Ellen Degeneres Show and Good Morning America. He was steadily gaining traction – and his debut album wasn’t even out yet.

My World 2.0: Justin’s Full-Length Debut

After releasing My World, his debut EP, and several highly successful singles, Justin dropped My World 2.0, his debut studio album. The record made it to No. 1 on the US Billboard albums chart, and Justin later went to the Grammys after it was nominated for the award for Best Pop Vocal Album. When the record came out, Justin was invited to the white house to sing for President Obama. After the release of My World 2.0, Justin put out Under the Mistletoe, his first Christmas album. A huge success, the album’s tracks are still heard on the airwaves every year when the holidays come around.

Believe: A Triple Platinum Record and Changes to Justin’s Image

Justin’s third record, Believe, was released on June 15, 2012, peaking at No. 1 on the US Billboard charts. The album features some of Justin’s biggest hits, including “As Long as You Love Me,” “Boyfriend,” and “Beauty and a Beat,” the third of which is a collaboration with Nicki Minaj.  Following the release of Believe, Justin did a tense interview with late-night talk show host David Letterman. Not long after the Letterman interview, Bieber got in a car crash in Beverly Hills, where he’d been living in the wake of his success. In addition to the crash, he made the news on several other occasions for high-profile antics.  At this point in Bieber’s career, it was clear that he had ditched the tween pop heartthrob persona. However, he still had plenty of growing up to do.

Collaborations, New Albums, and Maturing

In the years following the release of Believe, Justin put out a high-profile collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo and embarked on a world tour. He continued gaining traction on social media, racking up over a hundred million followers on both Instagram and Twitter. However, Bieber still hadn’t fully grown out of the awkward transitional stage between his tween years and the present. Justin found direction with his 2015 album Purpose, another No. 1 debut. The record was a huge success, and he followed it up with another Diplo collaboration, Major Lazer’s “Cold Water.” Meanwhile, Bieber developed a lasting beef with Taylor Swift related to his manager, Scooter Braun.

“Despacito” Becomes a Worldwide Phenomenon

In the years after “Purpose” came out, Justin’s career took an upward turn. In April 2017, he was featured on the remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s track “Despacito,” which became a massive success.

Getting Hitched and More Music

In 2018, Justin married Haley Baldwin, who became a frequent subject of his songs. In 2020, he released Changes, a multi-Platinum-selling record that features the likes of Post Malone, Travis Scott, Lil Dicky, and more. Not long after, he released high-profile collaborations with Ariana Grande, Kid Laroi, and others.  Bieber’s most recent album, 2021’s Justice, was also a huge hit. Its tracklist includes “Holy,” Justin’s collaboration with Chance the Rapper, and “Hold On,” a song co-written by Gotye, Bieber, and Jon Bellion.
