Justin's Early Life

Justin is the son of Janet Lynn Harless and Charles Randall Timberlake. His father is a choir director at a Memphis Baptist church, and his grandmother and grandfather have musical backgrounds as well. Timberlake's grandfather introduced him to the music of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, who were some of Justin's childhood favorites. Growing up, Justin starred as a Mouseketeer on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, which gave him his first taste of the spotlight. There, he starred alongside the likes of future girlfriend Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, actor Ryan Gosling, and NSYNC member JC Chasez.

Forming NSYNC

After appearing on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, Justin became one of the biggest stars of the '90s – and his superstardom came thanks to NSYNC. NSYNC formed in 1995, with JC Chasez and Justin serving as the group's two frontmen. The group went on to sell 11 million copies of their self-titled first album and performed at The Academy Awards, the Winter Olympics of 2002, and the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show – Justin later performed solo at Super Bowl XXXVIII.  One of their most well-known albums was Celebrity, and notable singles include “Bye Bye Bye” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart.”

Starting His Solo Career

In 2001, Timberlake wrote the song "Gone," intending to pitch it to Michael Jackson. Jackson rejected the song, and it was eventually performed by NSYNC. However, Jackson reached out to Timberlake after rejecting the song and encouraged him to pursue a solo career. That conversation was one of the pivotal moments in Justin's life, according to the artist. In 2002, NSYNC pressed pause on releasing music indefinitely, and the band's members went on to pursue individual projects and join new groups. Justin started working on music as a solo artist, collaborating with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, and The Neptunes to find his sound.

Justified

Justin's debut album, Justified, was preceded by the MTV premiere of his first single, "Like I Love You." Justified came out in November 2002, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and setting Justin up to be the quintessential pop star of the new millennium. The record features several hit singles, including "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body." After the release of Justified, Justin went on to appear on several TV shows, including as the host on Saturday Night Live. He also earned several Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Song Collaboration for his work with The Black Eyed Peas on "Where Is the Love?"  In 2003, he also recorded “I’m Lovin’ It,” a song used for a deal with McDonald’s that was incredibly lucrative.  With a successful solo album under his belt, Justin went on to co-headline the Super Bowl halftime show with Janet Jackson in 2004. However, Timberlake had to issue a public apology following a notorious "wardrobe malfunction" incident that exposed the audience to Jackson's breast.

 FutureSex/LoveSounds and Acting

Timberlake's second album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, was released on September 12, 2006. The record was made with assistance from will.i.am, Timbaland, Danja, and Rick Rubin, and it features Snoop Dogg as a musical guest, as well as several others.  "SexyBack," the lead single from the album, became a massive hit, making it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. After the release of the record, which was a huge success, Timberlake took a break from music for several years to focus on acting. Acting performances from this period included appearing as Sean Parker in the David Fincher Facebook biopic The Social Network, as well as in Bad Teacher alongside Cameron Diaz. He co-starred with Mila Kunis in Friends with Benefits and played the lead character in In Time, a sci-fi film directed by Andrew Niccol. He also voiced a character in the third Shrek film. Lesser-known film appearances by Timberlake included roles in Black Snake Moan, Southland Tales, Alpha Dog, and Edison Force. In 2013, he played a supporting role in the Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis.

Recent Music

Timberlake came back into the spotlight with The 20/20 Experience, an album that went on to become the best-selling album in the country in 2013. In 2016, he starred in Trolls, an animated film that featured his hit track "Can't Stop the Feeling!" In 2018, Timberlake released his fifth studio album, Man of the Woods. The country-inspired record features a guest appearance from Chris Stapleton, and it made it to number 9 on the US charts.
