Kacey's Early Life

Kacey Lee Musgraves is the daughter of Craig and Karen Musgraves, who still live in East Texas. She has one younger sister named Kelly, who works as a professional photographer. Kacey first started writing songs at an early age, and she began taking guitar lessons before high school. By the time she was in senior high, she was proficient in both mandolin and acoustic guitar. When Musgraves was 14 years old, she released her first album without any assistance from a label. Her early musical influences included Alison Krauss, John Prine, Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Lee Ann Womack, and other heroes in many genres.

Kacey Making It Big

Kacey gained exposure after she was discovered and signed to the Triple Pop label in 2008. Her first releases via Triple Pop were covers of OneRepublic's "Apologize" and Miley Cyrus' "See You Again," and they came out in 2012. The OneRepublic cover made it onto the Billboard Hot Singles chart, the first entry onto the chart for the American songwriter.  After her debut release, Musgraves toured around Europe in support of Lady A and released her major-label debut album shortly after on March 19, 2013. The record was produced by Musgraves, Luke Laird, and Shane McAnally and released via Mercury Nashville. It includes the singles "Merry Go Round," "Blowin' Smoke," "Follow Your Arrow," and "Keep It to Yourself," and it was hailed by many as one of the best albums of the year after its release.

Pageant Material

Kacey's second studio album, Pageant Material, was her first new album in two years. Released on June 23, 2015, the record features the singles "Biscuits" and "Dime Store Cowgirl." It was nominated for Album of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 2015. After Pageant Material, Kacey released her first Christmas Record, A Very Kacey Christmas, via Mercury Nashville on October 28, 2016.

Golden Hour

Five years after the release of her solo debut, Kacey released her fourth studio album, Golden Hour, on March 30, 2018. The record was produced by Ian Fitchuk, Daniel Tashian, and Musgraves, and it saw Kacey transitioning into the world of country pop music, a genre that she's credited with revitalizing.  The album was met with critical acclaim upon its release, receiving an 8.7/10 score from Pitchfork and a five-star review from The Guardian. Singles on the album included "Space Cowboy," "Butterflies," "High Horse," "Slow Burn," and "Rainbow," which were accompanied by the title track and several other songs.  The album won Album of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, the Grammy Awards, and several other ceremonies. In addition, the accompanying music video for the track "Rainbow" won Music Video of the Year at the CMAs. It even received an award of recognition from Apple Music.  Golden Hour was followed on November 28, 2019, by The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, Kacey's second Christmas record. In support of the album, Kacey embarked on a Christmas-themed tour with an ensemble crew of backing musicians.

Star-Crossed

Kacey's fifth studio album, Star-Crossed, was released on September 10, 2021. Sometimes considered a divorce record, the album was certainly inspired by Kacey's split with singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly, an artist who hasn't quite achieved the same celebrity status that Musgraves has. The first song released from the album was the single "Justified," which came out on August 27, 2021.  Following the album's release, Kacey appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform in only cowboy boots with a guitar covering her privates. The performance, which featured the songs "Camera Roll" and "Justified," was the first time an artist had ever been on SNL in the nude. Star-Crossed received critical acclaim on the same level as its predecessor, with many reviewers praising its raw, vulnerable lyrics. The album received several award nominations, including Album of 2021 at the People's Choice Awards. The album cut "Camera Roll" was also nominated for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for the 2022 Grammy Awards. In addition, Kacey released a companion film in support of the album, which includes guest appearances from Symone, Eugene Levy, and several other stars.
