Kehlani: The Bio

Kehlani Ashley Parrish was born in Oakland, California, on April 24th, 1995. She was adopted by her aunt after her mother was sentenced to jail time and could no longer take care of her. Kehlani’s father had passed away shortly after she was born, leaving her completely dependent on her aunt.  Kehlani is of mixed ethnic descent. In interviews, she has described her ethnicity as a mix of “Black, White, Native American, Filipino, and Mexican.”  In addition to performing as a singer, Kehlani is also an accomplished dancer. She is proficient in both modern dance and ballet. As a teenager, she studied dance at Oakland School for the arts in her hometown. Originally intending to be a professional dancer, Kehlani’s aspirations were detoured after a knee injury in middle school left her unable to dance.

POPLYFE

Kehlani’s first musical endeavor was as a member of POPLYFE, a group of teen singers based in Oakland. The group was featured on the sixth season of America’s Got Talent, and they placed fourth on the show. POPLYFE’s lineup was Kehlani, Dylan Wiggins, Jaden Wiggins, Dillon Ingram, Denzel Merritt, and Ali-Khan Lochin. Former members include Zendaya, Gabi Wilson, and others.  Kehlani started singing with POPLYFE in 2009. During the group’s 2011 appearance on America’s Got Talent, show judge Piers Morgan told Kehlani, “You’ve got real talent, but I don’t think you need the group.” Shortly after, Kehlani split with POPLYFE to pursue a solo career.

Striking Out On Her Own

Shortly after leaving POPLYFE, Kehlani relocated to Los Angeles, California, and spent time couch-surfing. However, things changed when Nick Cannon, the host of America’s Got Talent, reached out to her about music. Cannon wanted Kehlani to join a rap group, and she initially said yes. However, after creative disputes, Kehlani ended up leaving the group and relocating to her hometown of Oakland. After leaving LA, Kehlani went through a dark period. For a time, she was getting by stealing iPhones and other valuables and selling them. However, she eventually started dabbling in music again, releasing a single called “ANTISUMMERLUV” via Soundcloud. After Kehlani released her first single, it caught the attention of Nick Cannon. Cannon called her and told her he loved the song, then agreed to help her get a place to live and studio time back in Los Angeles.

Back In LA

Kehlani’s time in the studio in LA led to the release of Cloud 19, her debut mixtape. The release received attention from several prominent music press outlets, including Complex and Pitchfork. The former included the mixtape on its “50 Best Albums of 2014” list, and the latter included it on its list of “Overlooked Mixtapes of 2014.” Shortly after the release of the mixtape, Kehlani went on tour with rapper G-Eazy, supporting him on his From the Bay to the Universe Tour. Opening for G-Eazy brought more recognition to Kehlani, who was still finding her feet in the music industry. In 2015, Kehlani dropped a second mixtape, titled You Should Be Here. The mixtape received widespread critical acclaim, with several outlets, including Billboard, including it on “Best of the Year” lists. On You Should Be Here, Kehlani collaborated with Chance the Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid.  Not long after the release of You Should Be Here, Kehlani officially got signed to a major label, Atlantic Records. After getting signed, music journals like Rolling Stone and Complex took note of her meteoric rise to stardom, advising readers to keep an eye on her in the year to come.

A little over two years after the release of SweetSexySavage, Kehlani dropped her sophomore album, titled It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. The record includes multiple high-profile guest appearances, including James Blake, Masego, Jhene Aiko, and others. The record peaked at No. 2 on the US album charts and held the same spot on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.
