Fast Facts About LANY

LANY is a pop band that formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2014. The group comprises Paul Jason Klein (vocals), Les Priest (guitar), and Jake Goss (drums). The trio were friends in Los Angeles before moving to Nashville, where they first started collaborating on music. In years prior, Goss and Priest had been working on music together under the name WRLDS, and Klein had a solo career in Los Angeles.

  • The band first released music anonymously via Soundcloud, a popular streaming platform often used by independent artists. Their first few singles, “Hot Lights” and “Walk Away,” were uploaded without any hint as to who the artists were. Later in 2014, the trio revealed their identities.
  • LANY got their name from the initials of two major American Cities – Los Angeles, California, and New York City. Paul Jason Klein, the band’s frontman, explained in an interview that the initial inspiration for the name was his thoughts about how far these two cities are from each other. The name is pronounced “Lay-Nee.”
  • Before settling on LANY as their name, the trio had tossed around the idea of being called “TTYL.” However, Klein has said that they “didn’t want to be 13 for the rest of our lives,” which spurred the band to keep looking for more unique name ideas.
  • Paul Jason Klein, the leader of the band, is a 33-year-old former model from Oklahoma. He was born on April 30th, 1988, and his career in the modeling industry started when he was in his twenties. Before getting into music, he’s worked with Prada, Banana Republic, and more.
  • Klein is also well-known as the ex-boyfriend of renowned pop star Dua Lipa.
  • While the collective net worth of LANY is currently unknown, Paul Jason Klein is currently worth over $1.5 million.

LANY: The Music

  • Shortly after the release of their first singles on Soundcloud, LANY put out Acronyms, their debut EP. The collection of songs included “ILYSB,” a track that remains one of the band’s biggest hits to this day. The song, with a title that stands for “I Love You So Bad,” gained traction on streaming platforms, helping to expose LANY to a wider audience.
  • Other singles came in 2014, including “Made In Hollywood” and “Bad, Bad, Bad,” two tracks that are still fan favorites.
  • After the release of their initial EP, the band opened for acts like Twin Shadow, Tove Styrke, X Ambassadors, Halsey, and others.
  • In 2015, the band followed up their debut EP with I Loved You, another collection of songs that features a striking picture of a text message on its cover. The EP deals with themes of romance and heartbreak in the new millennium.
  • In late 2015, the band signed to Polydor Records and put out Make Out with the label, a set of songs that had previously been released by the band. In 2016, they went on tour with Ellie Goulding and continued building an international fan base.
  • One of the highlights of 2016 for the band was the release of a stripped version of “ILYSB.” This more intimate rendition of the band’s hit song gained nearly as much attention as the more produced original, and it brought additional attention to the rising pop group.

LANY: Touring

  • In 2016, the band embarked on their first headline tours, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. They also played at numerous festivals in the Summer that year, including Firefly, Bonnaroo, and more.
  • In 2017, the band toured with John Mayer following the release of Mayer’s album The Search for Everything. They were present for 7 of Mayer’s shows in North America.

Making More Music

  • The summer of 2017 brought with it LANY’s self-titled debut album. The record was released via Polydor and featured the single “Super Far,” which continues to be a crowd favorite at the band’s shows. LANY debuted “Super Far” on Apple Music’s Beats 1 show, hosted by Zane Lowe.
  • Following the release of their self-titled record, LANY continued touring, and Klein promptly got to work on writing their second album. Klein has said that Malibu Nights, LANY’s sophomore release, was written over the course of just over a month in early 2018. The first single from the album, “Thru These Tears'', was released on July 17th of that year, and the album followed in October. The band followed up the album with high-profile collaborations with Lauv and Julia Michaels.

Mama’s Boy

  • LANY’s most recent release is Mama’s Boy, their third full-length album. The record, released via Polydor, was produced by the band in conjunction with King Henry, Tyler Johnson, and Chad Copelin. The album features “Okay,” the band’s collaboration with Julia Michaels, and “Mean It,” their team-up with Lauv. These songs, released prior to the album as singles, both went on to chart in the Billboard Hot 100.
