Lauv's Origins

Ari Staprans Leff was born in San Francisco, but he spent the majority of his early childhood in Atlanta, Georgia. He relocated to Philadelphia around the time he started high school and began taking music seriously as a teenager.  At an early age, Ari started focusing on teaching himself to make his own music. He became proficient in piano, guitar, songwriting, production, and more thanks to the help of music teacher Jason Brook Zimmerman. After learning from Zimmerman, Ari started writing his own songs as a young teenager.

Becoming Lauv

Growing up, Ari Leff was a fan of artists like Owl City and Never Shout Never, who gave him a taste for pop music.  After graduation, he went on to study at NYU's Steinhardt School in New York City, where he studied music technology. During his time at New York University, he worked as a studio intern at Jungle City Studios, where the likes of Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Alicia Keys made music.  Ari first started using the name Lauv around his sophomore year of college. The stage name is Latvian for "Lion," and the meaning of his real name, "Ari," is lion in Hebrew. Ari started working as a co-writer for other artists in the mid-2010s. He helped to write songs for the electronic music trio Cheat Codes, as well as pop sensation Demi Lovato. The song "No Promises," a collaboration between Lauv, Lovato, and Cheat Codes, made it to Number 7 on the Billboard Pop charts.

Lauv's Breakout Hit

Lauv released his first EP, Lost in the Light, in September 2015. The EP features his first single, "The Other." While the collection of songs was met with some success, it wasn't until a few years later that the artist broke into the mainstream. Lauv scored his first hit on May 19, 2017, when he released the single "I Like Me Better." The track was his first song to reach the Billboard Hot 100, and it earned a Platinum certification in the United States and several other countries. After the release of the single, Lauv went on to support Ed Sheeran on the Divide Tour throughout Asia. Around the same time, Ari also embarked on his first headlining tour – The Late Nights, Deep Talks Tour.

I Met You When I Was 18 (The Playlist)

In 2018, Lauv went on a world tour for the first time, supported by artists like Jeremy Zucker and Ashe. The I Met You When I Was 18 Tour was followed by the release of an album of the same name, which came out on May 31, 2018.  The debut album was a compilation of 17 tracks, some of which had previously been released as singles.

How I'm Feeling

On March 6, 2020, Lauv dropped his first full-length, non-compilation studio album – How I'm Feeling. The album features some of Lauv's most successful tracks to date and includes guest appearances from some of the biggest stars in the world. Guests on How I'm Feeling include K-Pop sensations BTS, Anne-Marie, Troye Sivan, Alessia Cara, Sofia Reyes, and LANY. How I'm Feeling's tracklist is full of songs that touch on mental health-related topics. "Modern Loneliness," "Sad Forever," and other songs from the album all explore topics like depression and anxiety, and Lauv raised over $150,000 for various mental health charities with proceeds from the music video for "Sad Forever." The entirety of the proceeds from the video went to local mental health organizations in the LA area.

Ari's Personal Life

Ari has been open about his own struggles with mental health since he started releasing music, and it's definitely a topic that he's passionate about.  The singer was previously in a relationship with pop star Julia Michaels, but the couple split in late 2018. In early 2021, talk started circulating that Lauv was dating Sophie Cates, a musician who performs as Silver Sphere.
