Marshmello’s Early Days

Marshmello, real name Christopher Comstock, was born on May 19, 1992, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his mid-20s, Chris Comstock started releasing electronic music via Soundcloud under the name Marshmello. His first single on the platform was “Wavez,” a track that he followed with remixes of songs by Zedd, Skrillex, and Diplo.  Through his hard work and consistent releases, Marshmello earned the support of Skrillex, one of his heroes. The DJ reposted one of Marshmello’s songs on his Soundcloud page, and it wasn’t long before Marshmello was performing on massive stages and attracting the attention of labels. In late 2015 and early 2016, Marshmello made some of his most high-profile appearances yet. One was at Pomona, California's Hard Day of the Dead festival, and one was on the roster at Miami Music Week. He also performed at New York’s Pier 94. The first label that Marshmello signed to was Monstercat, a Canada-based electronic label that was a perfect home for his bass-heavy electronic dance music. His track “Alone” was later featured on Monstercat’s compilation Cataclysm.

Starting His Own Label

After Marshmello started making a name for himself, he departed from the Monstercat label and started his own – Joytime Collective. The first signee on the label was Slushii, another DJ and producer.

Behind The Mask

Since the beginning of his career, Christopher has opted to wear a full-head-covering mask to remain anonymous. The signature marshmallow mask helped Marshmello’s look become iconic, and it also helped Christopher keep his identity a secret Known by the alias Dotcom at the time, Christopher was able to keep a low profile at first, but it wasn’t long before fans started guessing that he was Marshmello.

Building Momentum

Marshmello’s debut album, Joytime, was released in January 2016 and featured the single “Keep It Mello,” with Mexican rapper Omar Linx. The album’s commercial success earned the DJ millions of new fans.  In June of the same year, Marshmello appeared at Electric Daisy Carnival alongside Dutch DJ Tiësto, who pulled a publicity stunt with Marshmello to make it look like Tiësto himself was the masked DJ. However, fans and the media weren’t convinced. One of Marshmello’s most successful releases is “Wolves,” a collaboration between the DJ and Selena Gomez. The non-album single came out in June 2017 between the releases of Joytime and Joytime II. In August of the same year, he collaborated with Khalid on the track “Silence,” which went multi-Platinum in the US. Another big success for Marshmello was the single “Friends,” which features British pop star Anne-Marie. Released on February 9, 2018, the track made it to No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the release of “Friends,” he put out “Happier,” a collaboration with the English pop group Bastille.

Marshmello’s Third Record and Other Recent Work

In 2019, Marshmello collaborated with the likes of A Day to Remember, Blackbear, and Yungblud on new singles. His collaboration with Kane Brown, “One Thing Right,” was also well-received. He also released a new full-length album, Joytime III. The record was followed by songs with Halsey, Juice Wrld, and several others. In June 2021, the DJ released his first non-Joytime album – Shockwave. Through the Joytime Collective label, Marshmello was able to have total creative freedom with the project.

Marshmello’s Charity Work

Marshmello has done significant charity work, including for KIND (Kids in Need of Defense) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). He joined forces with Tyler Blevins, one of the most successful Fortnite streamers, to donate half of their winnings from gaming competitions to KIND.  The DJ’s love for dogs inspired him to raise support for the ASPCA with his dog-themed song “Happier” and its accompanying music video.

Marshmello on YouTube
