Midland’s Origins

The group got their name from a song by Dwight Yoakam — one of the biggest names in country music – ”Fair to Midland,” a song whose title refers to the town of Midland-Odessa, Texas. Midland-Odessa is the home of Midland International Air and Space Port.  The band was founded by Jess Carson, Mark Wystrach, and Cameron Duddy, who all met while living near Los Angeles, California. However, after they all started collaborating on music together, they moved back to TX and eventually became Midland. After attending Cameron Duddy’s wedding in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the other future members of the group started playing songs and decided they wanted to form a band. When Cameron returned from his honeymoon, the trio started recording tracks at the Sonic Ranch, a studio in El Paso, TX.

The Band’s Members

  • Cameron Duddy, the band’s bassist and co-vocalist, got his first guitar from his dad when he was a kid. He started finding solace in music at an early age and later went on to become proficient in other instruments, as well as vocals. In addition to playing for Midland, Cameron is also a VMA-winning music video director with credits like Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” and several Midland videos.
  • Jess Carson, vocalist and guitarist, was born in Oregon, where he fell in love with country music at an early age. Carson is responsible for a large portion of the songwriting duties for Midland.
  • Mark Wystarch, vocalist and guitarist, was born to music-loving parents from LA and Tucson. In addition to playing music with Midland, he acts and models professionally.

Midland’s Music

In 2017, the band released “Drinkin’ Problem,” their debut single. The track performed extremely well on country radio and made it to No. 4 on the US Country charts. Later, the song was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA, selling 452,000 copies in the US. Later that year, the band released another successful single, “Make a Little.” Both of the singles were later featured on the band’s first record, On the Rocks.

On the Rocks

Released on September 22, 2017, via Big Machine Records, On the Rocks is the band’s debut studio album. Debuting at No. 1 on the Country Albums chart, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA. After the release of On the Rocks, the band toured throughout Texas and the rest of the US. They appeared at South by Southwest in Austin, performed in El Paso, and played massive shows in numerous other cities. They quickly made a name for themselves with their electrifying live performances.

Let It Roll & The Last Resort

The band’s sophomore record, Let It Roll, was released on August 23, 2019, via Big Machine Records. Another No. 1 debut on the country charts, the album received favorable reviews and made it to No. 16 on the Billboard 200. The album features the single “Cheatin’ Songs,” which hit the US and Canadian Country charts. The band released an EP, The Last Resort, in 2021. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the EP is set to be followed by a tour of the same name.

Midland’s Awards and Nominations

Midland has been nominated for a wide array of country music awards. They’ve received nods for the CMT Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards, ACM Awards – they won New Vocal Duo – and several Grammys. Their most-nominated song is “Drinkin’ Problem,” a track that received two Grammy Nods – one for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and one for Best Country Song – as well as an ACM Award nomination for Single Record of the Year.

Music Videos

Band member Cameron Duddy is a notable music video director, and he’s contributed his skills to several of the band’s own videos. Cameron directed the videos for “Drinkin’ Problem,” “Make a Little,” and “Mr. Lonely.”  Another video, this one for their 2018 song “Burn Out,” was directed by TK McKamy. McKamy had previously worked with the likes of Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Darius Rucker, Morgan Wallen, and many other country stars.

Guest Appearances

The band has been featured on songs by several other country artists, including “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” by Brooks & Dunn, a track from the duo’s 2019 album Reboot. They also provided guest vocals on “Redneck Girl,” a 2020 track by country superstar Tim McGraw. Formed just five years ago, Midland has quickly become one of the biggest groups in country music – and they’re just getting started.
