Biography

OneRepublic, an American pop rock band, hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Since the release of their breakthrough single, “Apologize,” a collaboration with legendary producer Timbaland, the band has been riding the top of the charts. One successful single after another has carried their career forward, aided by the songwriting and vocal chops of frontman Ryan Tedder.

Since 2007, the year the band released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, they’ve put out four more wildly successful records – Waking Up, Native, Oh My My, and Human. They’re often compared to other arena-ready pop-rock bands like Maroon 5, Coldplay, and Imagine Dragons.

Formation and Band Members

The band initially formed in 2002, and they went on to perform several shows around Los Angeles. Thanks to their compelling live performances, they were tapped early on for a record deal with Columbia. However, this deal was later dropped before their debut album came out.  OneRepublic consists of Ryan Tedder (lead singer and piano player), Drew Brown (keyboardist and guitarist), guitarists Zach Filkins and Eddie Fisher (Fisher also plays drums), keyboardist and cellist Brent Kutzle, and percussionist and drummer Brian Willet. Before the release of Dreaming Out Loud, the band’s lineup also included Tim Myers on bass and Jerrod Bettis on drums. The only original members still remaining in the band are Tedder, Filkins, and Brown.

How OneRepublic Made It Big

Before they became a household name, the members of OneRepublic spent several years in the studio working on what would later become Dreaming Out Loud. After losing an early record deal with Columbia Records, the band started working on promoting the album on their own. They posted music on MySpace, eventually gaining traction on the early social media platform. On MySpace, the band caught the eye of legendary producer Timbaland, who signed the band and contributed production to their album.

Dreaming Out Loud: A Smash-Hit Debut Album

On November 20, 2007, the band released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, via two record labels –Timbaland’s Mosley Music Group and Interscope records. The album is best known for its lead single, “Apologize,” which was previously featured on Timbaland’s compilation album Shock Value. Timbaland’s version of “Apologize” is essentially a remix, but it became the most successful version of the track in the long run. The original version, which features more organic production elements, is also featured on Dreaming Out Loud. Timbaland’s version of the track made it on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent eight weeks straight. The song was also eventually certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA. Dreaming Out Loud also features “Stop and Stare,” “Mercy,” and several other early hits.

A Hit Song for Ryan Tedder

Around the time of the release of Dreaming Out Loud, Ryan Tedder co-wrote and produced a song for English pop singer Leona Lewis – the wildly successful “Bleeding Love.” Writing and producing the track solidified Tedder as a triple threat in the music industry – it was clear from then on that he could hold his own as a writer, a producer, and an artist. Later in his career, Tedder went on to write songs for Adele, Taylor Swift, and many other notable musicians. He’s won three Grammys for his work on others’ songs.

Waking Up

The band’s second studio album was released on November 17, 2009, almost two years to the day after Dreaming Out Loud. Featuring the singles “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” “Marchin On,” and “Good Life,” the album made it to No. 21 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart.  It’s the band’s second release with Timbaland’s Mosley Music Group, but Timbaland didn’t contribute production assistance to this album – it’s almost entirely self-produced by the band’s members. The lead single from the record, “All the Right Moves,” was released on September 29, 2009. The track went on to be featured on several TV shows, including Gossip Girl and CSI: Miami.

Native and Oh My My

Native, the band’s third studio album, was released on March 25, 2013. Produced by a star-studded cast, including Benny Blanco, Jeff Bhasker, Emile Haynie, and many more, the album yielded the hit single “Counting Stars.” The track, released on June 14, 2013, went on to become the band’s biggest commercial success since “Apologize.”  “Counting Stars” was later certified Diamond by the RIAA, meaning the band sold the equivalent of 10 million units of the song. The accompanying music video, which was directed by James Lees, has over three billion views on YouTube. In October 2016, the band followed up Native with Oh My My, their fourth studio album. Like their previous albums, the record was released via Mosley and Interscope records. The album’s three singles were huge successes, and the album as a whole made it to No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Human

In August 2021, the band released Human, their first record in five years. Produced by members of the band with some outside assistance, the record features the hits “Didn’t I,” “Rescue Me,” “Better Days,” and several others.
