Phillip Phillip: The Bio

Best known as the winner of the eleventh season of the hit show American Idol, Phillip Phillips was born in Albany, Georgia, in 1990. The 30-year-old singer-songwriter has been an aspiring musician since he was young, first exploring guitar playing and songwriting as a teenager.  After carving out a niche in his Georgia town’s local music scene, Phillip competed in “Albany Star,” his hometown’s American Idol-style competition, in 2010. He took home first place and winning the competition allowed him to travel to Hollywood for nationals. Just two years later, Phillips was well on his way to becoming a star.

American Idol

In 2012, Phillips made it onto American Idol, winning the hearts of the judges and the millions watching at home with his distinct throaty vocal delivery and skillful guitar playing. During his time on the show, Phillips had to undergo multiple surgeries for a kidney condition that he’s struggled with since birth. He dealt with horrible pain during coaching and performances but persevered until the end and became one of the show’s biggest stars. Phillip Phillips got his first taste of fame and success as a contestant on American Idol. Phillips won the show’s eleventh season, breaking show records with his original song “Home.” “Home” became the highest-selling track from an American Idol season. Phillips’ first performance of the song on American Idol got him a standing ovation, and judge Randy Jackson described the track as “perfect.” The audience and judges adored Phillips for his vulnerability, the originality of his sound, and his compelling live performance on the show.  When Phillips released “Home,” his audience immediately broadened far beyond the millions of viewers of American Idol. As his debut single, the song hit No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its first week out. The massive success of “Home” made Phillip Phillips a household name. Its catchy chorus, heartfelt lyrics, and stomp-clap beat made the song an infectious hit that embodied the folk-pop sound of the 2010s.

Discography

Phillip has released three studio albums, along with a compilation and EP with recordings from his time on American Idol. His discography also includes numerous live sessions, including a collaboration with iTunes released in 2013. Some of his most well-known songs are “Home,” his coronation song from American Idol, “Gone, Gone, Gone,” and “Raging Fire.”

2012 – The World from the Side of the Moon

Shortly after winning American Idol, Phillips released his debut full-length record, The World from the Side of the Moon, on November 19, 2012. The album featured the singles “Home,” “Gone, Gone, Gone,” and “Where We Came From.” Listeners can hear Phillips tapping into several of his biggest influences on the record, including Dave Matthews and John Butler – Phillip has cited these two renowned musicians as two of his favorites. The World from the Side of the Moon was certified platinum by the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA), and “Home,” its biggest hit, achieved quadruple-platinum status. “Gone, Gone, Gone” also went platinum and continues to be a favorite among Phillip’s fans.  The record drew comparisons to Mumford & Sons, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews, Arcade Fire, and other musicians and bands known for their passionate, anthemic recordings and high-energy live performances. However, critics also noted that Phillips was expertly bringing his blend of folk, pop, and rock to a much broader audience than some of his influences ever could.

2014 – Behind the Light

Behind the Light, Phillip’s sophomore album, was released on May 16, 2014, via Interscope. Produced by Phillips and collaborators Gregg Wattenberg and Dereck Fuhrmann, the record shows a rockier side of Phillips’s sound. The album’s singles were “Raging Fire” and “Unpack Your Heart,” the former of which is one of the biggest hits in Phillip’s discography.  “Raging Fire” was written by Phillips, Fuhrmann, Wattenberg, and songwriter Todd Clark. The song ended up being Phillip’s most successful song since the release of “Home” and “Gone, Gone, Gone,” showing the world that he was far from done with making his signature blend of folk and rock for the masses. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Phillips described “Raging Fire” as being a song about “wanting to feel those butterflies.” It’s a passionate love song about the power of the affection shared between two people. Critics praised the song for its emotional lyricism and the impact of its highly singable chorus. Writing for Digital Journal, critic Marcos Papadatos described the track as “a great love song.” Others echoed Papadatos’ sentiment, with some critics affectionately comparing the track to releases from Dave Matthews Band and Fun.’s “We Are Young.”

2018 – Collateral

Phillips’ third full-length release, Collateral, came out on January 18th, 2018. At this point, Phillips was six years removed from his American Idol win, but his third album proved that he was far from a one-trick pony or a one-hit-wonder. The album includes “Magnetic,” “My Name,” “Part Of My Plan,” and more.

Conclusion

Phillip Phillips is one of the most successful singer-songwriters to emerge from American Idol. In 2020, he returned to the show for a live performance of “Home,” and the new decade is looking promising for the young star.    Sources: The Untold Truth Of Phillip Phillips | The List 'American Idol' winner Phillip Phillips, wife welcome first child | USA Today Mumford and Sons | NPR
