Popcaan: The Music

Popcaan has had some high-profile collaborations since his career got started. He provided vocals for the song “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times),” a track from Jamie xx’s debut solo album In Colour. The song became a massive hit, Going gold in the US and silver in the UK. Popcaan was also featured on “Saturnz Barz,” a song from the 2017 Gorillaz record Humanz. Popcaan provides the majority of the vocals on the track, which has a bitcrushed beat that is both intense and supremely cool and collected.  His other collaborations include “Nobody’s Love (Remix),” a 2020 track from Maroon 5, “I’m in Control” by British duo AlunaGeorge, “Should’ve Been Me” by Naughty Boy, and “Lighters Up” by Snoop Lion. The Jamaican artist has also released four albums, as well as the mixtape Bay Badness in 2012. His most recent record is Fixtape, released in August 2020. The album was released via OVO Sound and features production work by a wide array of DJs and beatmakers. Drake, Partynextdoor, French Montana, and several other artists.  The record was met with positive reviews from numerous outlets, including Pitchfork and Allmusic. The former put the album in their “Best New Music'' category, giving it an exceptional 8.3/10, which is incredibly high for the often-stingy music outlet. Pitchfork described the album as “the best of every facet of his work.”

Follow-Up Albums

Forever, Popcaan’s sophomore album, also received positive reviews from critics and was met with praise from fans as well. The LP was released in 2018 via Mixpak records and is a blend of dancehall, reggae fusion, and pop. Popcaan recorded the 17 tracks on the album at Brooklyn’s MixPak Studios and Unruly Entertainment in Kingston Jamaica. The album features only one guest artist, Davido. It was included on several “Best of 2018” lists, including those from Noisey, Complex, and Esquire. Popcaan’s debut studio album, Where We Come From, was released in June 2014 and distributed via Mixpak. The album features production work by Dre Skull, Dubbel Dutch, and several other beatmakers, and it was met with rave reviews upon its release. Considered an incredibly strong debut, the album received praise from outlets like NPR, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Billboard, Complex, and several others. The album features a cameo from Pusha T and peaked at No. 2 on the US Reggae Albums charts. As a live performer, Popcaan has opened for Drake and several other high-profile rappers. He also won the Red Bull Culture Clash, a competition that included Wiz Khalifa, UKG, Eskimo Dance, and other hip-hop artists from multiple continents.
