Biography

Portugal. The Man is a rock band from Wasilla, Alaska, that formed in 2004. The group is currently based in Portland, Oregon, and consists of John Baldwin Gourley, Zach Carothers, Jason Sechrist, Zoe Manville, Kyle O’Quin, and Eric Howk. Gourley and Carothers were the group’s first members, and they started playing music together while still in high school in Alaska. 

Since then, the group has released eight studio albums, the most recent being 2017’s Woodstock. That record features the smash-hit track “Feel It Still,” which earned the band a Grammy for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance. They’ve performed at festivals like Lollapalooza, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and more, and they have a storied reputation as festival favorites with an inescapable presence. They claim they’ve been inspired by groups like Pink Floyd and Radiohead.

How Portugal. The Man Formed 

John Gurley and Zach Carothers were originally part of a group called Anatomy of a Ghost, an emo outfit that featured Gourley, Carothers, Nick Simon, Joe Simon, and Dewey Halpaus. The band released one album, Evanesce, on Fearless Records in 2003. That label later became home to Portugal. The Man for their first two albums.  After several years of performing with Anatomy of a Ghost, Gourley and Carothers disbanded their first project and joined forces with three others to form the first lineup for Portugal. The Man. The band released their debut studio album, Waiter: "You Vultures!" on January 26, 2006. the original lineup consisted of Nick Klein, Wesley Hubbard, Harvey Tumbleson, Carothers, and Gourley. None of the original members except for Carothers and Gourley are still with the band. 

Early Records From Portugal. The Man

The band released their second album, Church Mouth, via Fearless Records on July 24, 2007. The album was produced by Casey Bates, who had previously worked on the group's first record. Afterward came their third, Censored Colors, which was released on September 16, 2008, via Equal Vision Records and produced by Kirk Huffman, Phillip Peterson, and Paul Q. Kolderie.

The Satanic Satanist and More

The group's fourth full-length studio album features a stacked lineup of John Gourley on guitar, vocals, and organ, Garrett Lunceford on drums, Ryan Neighbors on piano and keyboards, Zach Carothers on bass, and Zoe Manville on vocals. Released on July 21, 2009, the album was followed by an acoustic companion record titled The Majestic Majesty. The band's fifth studio album, American Ghetto, was released on March 2, 2010, via Equal Vision. It received positive reviews from AllMusic, Sputnikmusic, and several other outlets, but its follow-up – 2011's In the Mountain in the Cloud – was a much bigger commercial success. In the Mountain in the Cloud was produced by John Hill, John Gourley, and Casey Bates and released via Atlantic Records. They recorded it in a variety of locations, including New York, El Paso, San Diego, and more. It was the band's first major-label release, and it features the singles "Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now)" and "So American," both of which became sleeper alternative hits.  That year, they also released a short film that featured “Sleep Forever” and "Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now)."

Evil Friends 

The band's seventh full-length record, 2013's Evil Friends, is often cited as one of their best. Produced by Danger Mouse and released via Atlantic, the album features several singles that dominated alternative radio airwaves throughout 2013, including "Evil Friends," "Modern Jesus," and "Purple Yellow Red and Blue."  The album took Portugal. The Man's success to new heights, and added a more traditional indie rock flavor to their psychedelic sound. 

Woodstock 

Portugal. The Man's most recent record, Woodstock, features the 6x RIAA Platinum single "Feel It Still," which went on to earn the band their first win at the 2018 Grammy Awards. Released via Atlantic and featuring production work from Mike D from Beastie Boys, John Hill, Asa Taccone, Danger Mouse, Casey Bates, and others, the project features cameos from the late Richie Havens, Son Little, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Fat Lip, and Zoe Manville. The release of their RIAA certified-gold album was an astounding success.  In addition to the runaway success of "Feel It Still," "Live in the Moment" also became a major alternative hit. That track reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and maintained a 20-week residency there. Its release was followed by appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Late Show with James Corden. 

About the Band ​​

Since they formed, the band has been open about their concern for various human rights, mental health, and environment-related causes, as well as artistry. They've partnered with numerous organizations over the years, like Protect Our Winters (which deals with climate change), The Skatepark Project (which helps build public skate parks in underserved communities), The National Coalition Against Censorship, and March for Our Lives (which deals with gun reform).  Their continued passion even led them to form their own non-profit, The PTM Foundation, which supports community health, universal issues, and causes related to indigenous peoples. Their advocacy for social justice has led to recent partnerships with Keep Oregon Well, HeadCount, and other organizations.  The band's current lineup consists of John Baldwin Gourley on lead vocals, backing vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, synths, drum machines, and bass guitar, Zachary Scott Carothers on bass guitar, percussion, backing vocals, and lead vocals, Kyle O'Quin on keys, synths, backing vocals, and organ, Eric Howk on lead guitar, Jason Sechrist on drums, and Zoe Manville on backing vocals and percussion. Over the past decade, their lineup has undergone multiple changes.
