Biography

Post Malone is Austin Richard Post, an American rapper, singer, and songwriter who first broke through into the mainstream with the single “White Iverson.” A year after that hit track was released, he dropped his debut album, Stoney, via Republic Records.

Austin found further success with his sophomore record, Beerbongs and Bentleys, which reached number one on the Billboard 200. The record features “Rockstar,” a multi-Platinum single that is one of Post’s biggest hits to date. Beerbongs earned Posty a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year in 2017.

Since the release of his first two records, Post has been featured on the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, collaborated with Justin Bieber, Ty Dolla Sign, and more, and become one of the biggest names in popular music.

Becoming Post Malone

Born in Syracuse, New York, on July 4, 1995, Post is the son of the concessions manager for the Dallas Cowboys. Before starting his work in sports, Rich Post, Austin’s father, was a DJ, and he exposed Austin to numerous genres of music.  After relocating to Grapevine, Texas, when his father switched jobs, Austin started playing guitar, primarily inspired by his love for the video game Guitar Hero. He even ended up auditioning for a role as guitarist in the metalcore band Crown the Empire. However, the band passed on Austin after he broke several guitar strings during his tryout.  From a young age, Austin never got caught up in the trappings of one particular genre. Instead, his taste in music branched out in all different directions, largely inspired by his father. To this day, Austin loves alternative rock, country, hip-hop, and metal.  Post started performing as “Post Malone” when he was a young teenager after he used a random name generation website to come up with “Malone.” As a teenager, Post used free audio software to make his first rap mixtape, Young and After Them Riches, which he showed only to his high school friends. Austin’s interest in music earned him the senior superlative “Most Likely to be Famous” when he graduated.

“White Iverson” Becomes a Hit

In February 2015, Post uploaded the hip-hop track “White Iverson” to his SoundCloud account. The song spread throughout the internet like wildfire, even earning Posty shoutouts from fellow rappers Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller.  In July of the same year, Post released a music video for “White Iverson,” which got over a million views within a month of its release.  In August, he got a record deal with Republic Records, performed at Kylie Jenner’s 18th birthday party, worked with Young Thug, and even became friends with Kanye West. His popularity in the music industry was growing fast, and it kept on growing when he opened up for Justin Bieber on his Purpose World Tour in 2016 and 2017.

August 26th and Stoney

On May 12, 2016, Post Malone released August 26th, his debut mixtape. Featuring collaborations with Jeremih, 2 Chainz, Lil Yachty, Jaden Smith, and others, the mixtape serves as the precursor to Stoney, Post’s debut full-length album. In December 2016, Post finally dropped a full-length album – the triple Platinum Stoney. Produced by Frank Dukes, Andrew Watt, Pharrell Williams, Ilangelo, and a host of others, the album features guest appearances from the likes of Justin Bieber, Quavo, and Kehlani.  The track “Congratulations'', which features Quavo, was certified 11x Platinum in the United States after its release, making it one of Post’s biggest hits to date.

Beerbongs and Bentleys

In April 2018, Post followed up Stoney with Beerbongs and Bentleys, a massive commercial success that went on to go five-times Platinum. “Rockstar,” which features 21 Savage, and “Psycho” were the biggest tracks on the album, with both reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Hollywood’s Bleeding

In July of 2019, Post released “Goodbyes,” a track that features his friend and frequent collaborator Young Thug. In September of the same year, the track was featured as a single on Hollywood’s Bleeding, the rapper and singer’s third studio album. The album also features “Sunflower,” a track from the soundtrack to the film Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. Hollywood’s Bleeding features production work by Andrew Watt, who had also worked on Beerbongs and Bentleys. Other producers on the record include Brian Lee, DJ Dahi, Emile Haynie, Frank Dukes, and Post Malone Himself. After the release of Hollywood’s Bleeding, the album was met with positive reviews from critics and made it to Number one on the US Billboard 200 albums chart. Hollywood’s Bleeding went on to become a 3x-Platinum record in the US and a 6x Platinum album in Canada. “Circles,” the third single from the album, became the biggest hit from the record and was nominated for a Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
