Shawn Mendes’s Early Years

  • Shawn was born in Pickering, Ontario, in Greater Toronto. His parents are Karen and Manuel, and he has a younger sister named Aaliyah. Shawn’s mother is from England, and his father is from Portugal.
  • Shawn was into acting as a teenager, but also exhibited plenty of athletic ability. He was part of the glee club and played hockey and soccer.
  • At just 14 years old, Mendes started teaching himself to play guitar by watching YouTube videos. A fan of Justin Bieber, Shawn posted a short cover of Bieber’s song “As Long as You Love Me” on the social media platform Vine. The cover was an overnight success on the platform and drew in thousands of viewers.
  • Over a period of just a few months, Shawn amassed a following of several million fans on Vine, thanks to a series of his cover versions of popular songs. He was popular for a mix of Ed Sheeran’s and Justin Bieber’s styles. It was there that he was discovered by Island Records, who signed him in 2014.
  • Shawn was featured on The Vamps’ song “Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart),” a track inspired by Simon and Garfunkel’s hit “Cecelia.”
  • The same year, Shawn won a Teen Choice Award for Webstar in Music and embarked on a tour supported by Austin Mahone. He also appeared at Magcon, a Vine-centric convention.

Shawn’s Music

In 2014, Shawn released his debut EP, which hit No. 5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and sold 48,000 copies in a week. The 15-year-old's debut single, released in June, was titled “Life of the Party.” The album was followed by the second single “Something Big,” which hit No. 80 on the Hot 100.  The following year, in May 2015, Shawn scored a major hit with “Stitches,” a track written and produced by Teddy Geiger and Danny Parker, along with Daylight. The track became Shawn’s first top-10 hit in the US, also hitting the charts in Canada, Germany, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. “Stitches” is still one of Shawn’s best-known songs, and it was ranked by Jon Caramanica of the New York Times as one of the best songs of 2015. That same year, he opened for Taylor Swift in concert for her 1989 tour.  Shawn’s next single was his 2015 collaboration with girlfriend Camila Cabello. The song, titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” is Cabello’s first appearance on a track as a solo artist. Cabello and Mendes performed the song together at the 2016 People’s Choice awards, as a musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and several more times on TV. In 2019, Mendes and Cabello collaborated again on “Señorita,” which went on to receive a Grammy nomination.

Handwritten and More Singles

  • Shawn’s debut full-length album, Handwritten, came out on April 14, 2015. The record hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the US and charted elsewhere as well.
  • Shawn’s first single of 2016, “Treat You Better,” was co-produced by Dan Romer, Daylight, and Teddy Geiger and written by Geiger, Scott Harris, and Shawn. The track hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • The singer’s next single, “Mercy,” is another collaboration with Teddy Geiger. Co-produced by Jake Gosling, the track comes from Shawn’s second full-length studio album, Illuminate.

Illuminate

Illuminate was released on September 23, 2016, via Island Records. The album features production by Jake Gosling, Teddy Geiger, Andrew Maury, Dan Romer, Daylight, Laleh Pourkarim, and Scott Harris.  The record hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was followed by the Illuminate World Tour in 2017.

Shawn Mendes

Shawn’s self-titled third album was released on May 25, 2018, via Island Records. For this record, Mendes collaborated with a star-studded cast of writers and producers, including Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, Julia Michaels, Khalid, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Ian Kirkpatrick, and others. It hit number one on the US Billboard, and Mendes is the third-youngest artist to collect three number one albums at this point in an impressive musical feat. Along with this album came the ever-popular lead single, “In My Blood.”

Wonder

  • Shawn’s most recent record, Wonder, came out on December 4, 2020. The album features production work by Ricky Reed, Scott Harris, Frank Dukes, John Ryan, Kid Harpoon, and Mendes himself.
  • A highlight on the new record is “Monster,” a collaboration with Justin Bieber, which reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.
  • Mendes released Wonder alongside a documentary titled Shawn Mendes: In Wonder, which gave fans a glimpse into Shawn’s life behind the scenes.
  • Shawn’s vocals on Wonder were praised by critics, with several citing it as his best work yet vocally.
