Biography

Steve Lacy (full name Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya) is a songwriter, singer, producer, and musician from Compton, California, not to be mistaken with Steve Lacy, the saxophonist. Born May 23, 1998, the 23-year-old musical prodigy first stepped into the spotlight as a member of The Internet, a Los Angeles-based R&B outfit. The Internet has close ties to Odd Future, the group responsible for giving the world Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and others.

Lacy’s music is a unique blend of alternative R&B, neo-soul, lo-fi, funk, indie rock, and other genres. He’s known for his DIY approach to production, with some of his earliest recordings being made on his phone. Still in his early 20s, the musician has gained a devoted following of loyal fans, many of whom have been listening since his time as a member of The Internet.

This is the story of how Steve rose to fame and the music he’s made since.

Steve's Early Life

Born in Compton to an African-American mother and a Filipino father, Steve was solely raised by his mom. His father passed away when he was only ten years old, and Steve has shared in interviews that the two never had a significant relationship.  Steve took an interest in guitar at an early age and started teaching himself to play after falling in love with the video game Guitar Hero. He serves as the primary guitarist on all of his recordings, but that’s far from the only instrument he’s mastered. Steve is also proficient in drums, keyboards, bass, and vocals. Lacy went to private school for the majority of his early years, as did his sisters. The Lacy kids were as sheltered as possible by their mom, who wanted to keep them away from the ugly side of Compton.

Lacy and The Internet

By the time he was a teenager, Lacy had joined his high school jazz band, where he met Jameel Bruner. Bruner and Lacy would later go on to become members of The Internet. The Internet initially formed when Lacy was still a tween, with the group’s original lineup consisting of a combination of Odd Future members and newcomers. Steve became a member of The Internet in 2015, serving as the primary guitarist for the band. Around the same time, he released the single “C U Girl.” During his time with The Internet, Steve acted as both a musician and a producer. He co-produced Ego Death, The Internet’s third studio album, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. The band’s follow-up, Hive Mind, was released on July 20, 2018, and also features Lacy.  Hive Mind is the last Internet album to be released as of 2021. Since that record dropped, Lacy has primarily been focused on developing his career as a solo artist.

Becoming an All-Star Producer

Throughout his career, Steve has produced songs for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Vampire Weekend, GoldLink, Isaiah Rashad, and more. In fact, he produced Lamar’s song “Pride” from his DAMN album and is featured on J.Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only. He started producing for others when The Internet went on hiatus. He self-produced his debut solo EP, Steve Lacy's Demo, in February of 2017, using his iPhone microphone to record vocals and programming drum patterns in Ableton for the song-series. Steve's earliest work as a guitarist was for The Internet, but he also played guitar on all of his own early recordings. To track his guitars, he used a plug-in piece for an iPhone called an iRig, keeping with his minimalist, DIY approach to production. For his work on Kendrick Lamar's DAMN., Steve won his first Grammy Award in 2018. His debut album, Apollo XXI, received a Grammy nod for Best Urban Contemporary album two years later.

Recent Production Work

In the last few years, Steve has done production work for Kali Uchis on her album Isolation, as well as for Solange, Mac Miller, Denzel Curry, Twenty88, and YG. He's also been featured on music by Blood Orange, Syd, and Matt Martians and added many more collaborations to his portfolio. Steve also played a key role in the production of Tyler, the Creator's hit record Flower Boy, appearing on the song “911/Mr. Lonely” alongside Tyler and Frank Ocean.

Apollo XXI

Steve Lacy's self-produced debut album dropped on May 24, 2019, via 3Qtr. The album features the singles "N Side," which was released early in April, "Playground," and "Hate CD," and made it to number 160 on the US album charts. The album received critical acclaim, with reviewers expressing admiration for Lacy's vocals and the eclectic nature of his sound. He's gained millions of fans in the last few years, but his popularity really exploded when Apollo XXI came out.

What’s Steve Up To Now?

As of 2021, Steve is still considered an active member of The Internet. However, the group hasn’t released any new music since 2018, which has left the project on the backburner for Lacy for some time.  While The Internet has been on hiatus, Lacy has primarily been recording and releasing his own music and producing for others. We can definitely expect new work from him before the end of the year.
