Biography

The Kid Laroi, real name Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard, was born in Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia, on August 17, 2003. Since 2015, the Australian rapper and singer has been releasing music that is a distinct blend of rap, pop, trap, emo, and other genres.

He first got involved in the music scene when he became friends with the since-departed rapper Juice Wrld, who met Charlton while touring in Australia. He’s worked with other artists like YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Cole Bennett.

At a young age, Charlton started rapping, inspired by the music shown to him by his mom. He grew up listening to Fugees, Tupac, and other hip-hop greats and first began to rap at just 13 years old. He began posting his music on SoundCloud. By the time Howard was 15, he’d signed a deal with Columbia Records and Grade A Productions. Since then, he’s become a household name thanks to hits like “Let Her Go,” “Without You,” and “Stay.” His style has been compared to Lil Peep and even Post Malone.

The Kid Laroi’s Origins

Charlton was born to Nick, a music producer, and Sloane, a record exec in the suburbs of Sydney. Growing up in a musical family of mixed ethnic heritage, Charlton was exposed to an eclectic blend of music from a young age.  Howard is of Aboriginal descent, and his father, Nick, comes from a French family. His Aboriginal bloodline links him to the Kamilaroi people, one of the largest indigenous groups in Australia. To get his artistic alias, Charlton shortened “Kamilaroi” to “Laroi.” As a kid, Charlton went to Australian Performing Arts Grammar School, a prestigious private institution that places a heavy emphasis on creative subjects. He showed a knack for music at an early age and was inspired by his parents’ music taste to start rapping. In 2018,  just barely into high school, Charlton released his first music as The Kid Laroi. His debut EP, 14 With a Dream, helped him gain some traction, but it was reaching the finals in Triple J’s Unearthed music competition that got him his first taste of stardom. Not long after reaching the finals in Unearthed, Laroi was mentored by Juice Wrld, who got him connected with Lil Bibby, the head of Grade A Productions. Laroi ended up getting a deal with Grade A and Columbia and went on several tours with Juice Wrld as an opening act. After touring extensively in Australia, Laroi released the single “Let Her Go” in December, and the song’s music video went viral.

The Kid Laroi’s Music

The Kid Laroi followed the success of “Let Her Go” with another single, “Diva.” This track features Lil Tecca, an American rapper, and was followed up by another highly successful music video. Not long after that, he released “Addison Rae,” a track in which he expresses his affection for the titular social media star. The song was certified Gold in Australia, a first for Laroi. In addition, it peaked at No. 76 on the Australian charts. After the release of “Addison Rae,” Laroi was featured in the music video for “Blueberry Faygo,” a song by Lil Mosey. After this cameo, he collaborated with rapper Lil Tjay for the track “Fade Away” and with Blackbear and Bankrol Hayden on Y2K’s track “Go Dumb” in April of 2020. He also featured in a collaboration on Bankrol’s debut studio album in June 2020.

F*ck Love: The Kid Laroi’s First Mixtape

Laroi also provided production assistance himself. After its release, the mixtape was nominated for Best Hip-Hop Release at the 2020 ARIAs, Australia’s biggest music awards ceremony.  F*ck Love has been re-released several times since its original July 2020 debut. Deluxe editions of the debut album feature guest appearances by Justin Bieber, G Herbo, Polo G, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Durk, Stunna Gambino, and others. An extended version included six new tracks that were not featured on the original.

Without You: A Smash Hit Single

Produced by Blake Slatkin and Omar Fedi, the track peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a remix featuring Miley Cyrus was released. Cyrus and Laroi went on to perform the remixed version of the song on Saturday Night Live Since the release of “Without You,” The Kid Laroi’s popularity has skyrocketed. He followed up the single with another, “Stay,” featuring Justin Bieber.
