Reznor's Early Life

Trent Reznor was born in New Castle, a town in Pennsylvania, to Nancy Lou and Michael Reznor. His birthday is May 17, 1965. Reznor has one sister, Tera, and the two Reznor siblings were primarily raised by their mother and grandparents after their parents divorced.  Growing up, Trent focused primarily on piano, skateboarding, and other hobbies. The first concert he ever attended was an Eagles show in 1976.  As a high schooler, Reznor was involved in the musical theater program and appeared in several well-known productions. His high school theater credits include The Music Man, Jesus Christ Superstar, and more.  Reznor studied computer engineering at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, after graduating from high school in 1983. By the time he was in college, he was already a member of a band called Option 30. Option 30 was a new wave project that featured Reznor alongside several high school friends. However, Reznor left the group after dropping out of college and moving to Cleveland, Ohio. There, Trent joined The Innocent, then played with another group called Exotic Birds, as well as another, Slam Bamboo.

Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails was formed in 1988 as a solo project for Reznor. However, Reznor was eventually joined by Atticus Ross, along with touring musicians Robin Finck, Allesandro Cortini, and Ilan Rubin.  Nine Inch Nails' first taste of mainstream success came with their 1989 debut album Pretty Hate Machine. Their follow-up, Broken, brought them additional success, as did their EP, Fixed. 1994's The Downward Spiral became their biggest hit, earning a Platinum certification from the BPI. The lyrics from The Downward Spiral became a major focal point for critical acclaim and controversy, both of which have followed Reznor throughout his career.  Signed to Interscope Records and with several successful studio albums under their collective belt, Nine Inch Nails followed The Downward Spiral with several more records in the 90s and 2000s, including The Fragile, With Teeth, The Slip, Hesitation Marks, Bad Witch, Add Violence, and Not the Actual Events. Meanwhile, Trent Reznor partnered with band member Atticus Ross to focus on soundtracks.  Reznor’s most recent work with Nine Inch Nails includes the 2020 follow-up to the Ghosts I-IV instrumental album, Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts

Composing

Trent Reznor's first film soundtrack was composed for the Oliver Stone film Natural Born Killers, which was released in 1994. The score features the Nine Inch Nails track "Burn." Nine Inch Nails contributed a cover of The Joy Division's "Dead Souls" for the soundtrack to the 1994 film The Crow. Before the end of the millennium, Reznor composed the soundtrack for the David Lynch film Lost Highway. His first score of the 2000s was for the Robin Williams film One Hour Photo, but Reznor's compositions for the movie weren't the right style or genre for the film. Instead, the work that Reznor did for One Hour Photo became the foundation for the NIN record All That Could Have Been. Reznor's creative partnership with Atticus Ross led to his first Academy Award win – Best Original Score for the 2010 film The Social Network. Ross and Reznor later won the award again for Soul in 2020.  Other scores composed by Ross and Reznor include the Watchmen TV series, Before the Flood, and several other soundtracks. With Nine Inch Nails, Reznor also composed scores for several video games, including Quake, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and Year Zero.

Reznor’s Personal Life
