Tyga Then and Now

  • Michael Ray Stevenson grew up in Compton, California, to Vietnamese and Jamaican parents. He was a fan of rap from a young age, citing Eminem, Lil Wayne, and others as early influences on his musical development.
  • Tyga’s backstory is somewhat up for debate, with the rapper sometimes making claims that he was raised in the San Fernando Valley, an affluent neighborhood in California. He’s also said that his parents drove luxury cars and that he got his stage name Tyga from being called Tiger Woods by his mother. However, Tyga has said that these statements were made in jest.
  • Stevenson started rapping in the late 2000s, making mixtapes that caught the attention of other hip-hop artists, including his cousin, Travie McCoy. McCoy helped Tyga get signed to the Bad Squad label, which he eventually left behind when rapper Lil Wayne gave him a deal with Young Money Entertainment in 2008. Gym Class Heroes member Travis McCoy and Tyga also appeared on the remix of punk-pop group Fall Out Boy’s “Arms Race.”
  • After signing to Young Money, Tyga’s music started to show up all over the place. He was featured on songs by Chris Brown, DJ Ill Will, DJ Rockstar, and more, and his song “Deuces” peaked at No. 1 on the Hip-Hop charts in the US and Billboard Hot 100.
  • Compton rapper Tyga was previously dating the notable model Blac Chyna, who appeared in the music video for the hit track “Rack City.” Blac Chyna and Tyga had a son, King Cairo Stevenson, on October 16, 2012. After getting engaged in December 2012, they dated for several more years before splitting up in 2014.
  • A few years later, Tyga got into a relationship with socialite Kylie Jenner, who he dated until April 2017. The relationship was a source of controversy due to Jenner’s age at the time – Jenner was 16 when they started dating. In September of 2016, while he was dating Jenner, he signed with Kanye West’s label GOOD Music Imprint, while West was also in a relationship with a Kardashian.
