Facts About XXXTentacion’s Music

  • XXXTentacion’s first EP, The Fall, came out on November 21, 2014. Before dropping a full-length album, he put out several other mixtapes and singles, including collaborations with Ski Mask the Slump God and others.
  • On August 25, 2017, XXXTentacion released 17, his debut album, via Bad Vibes Forever and Empire Records. The record was later certified double-Platinum in the United States, and the single “Sad!” made it to Number One on the Hot 100.
  • Onfroy’s first music video for the song “Look at Me” came out on September 12, 2017.
  • Jahseh is considered to be one of the pioneers of Soundcloud Rap, a genre known for its prominent use of trap elements and more emotional lyrics. The rapper had one of the biggest debuts in the Soundcloud rap genre, with his first single gaining over 1.6 billion streams on Spotify.
  • In October 2017, XXXTentacion signed to Caroline, a chapter of Capitol Music Group. However, it wasn’t long before the rapper made a statement saying he was retiring from music, adding that he would start making music again if he could repair his friendship with another rapper, Ski Mask the Slump God.
  • XXXTentacion was listed by XXL on their “2017 Freshman Class” roundup, their picks for rappers to look out for in the coming years.
  • On May 10, 2018, Spotify stopped putting Onfroy’s music on curated playlists, a decision that they made based on his behavior and the assault and domestic violence charges against him. Since long before the streaming service made this move, XXXTentacion has been one of the most controversial figures in hip-hop.
  • After the rapper’s death, two posthumous albums were released under his name – Bad Vibes Forever and Skins. Like many deceased rappers, XXXTentacion retained his loyal following of fans long after his death, and these releases made it to the top 5 on the Billboard 200 in the US.

XXXTentacion’s Reputation Troubles

XXXTentacion has always been a controversial figure. His first arrest occurred in late 2012 when he was taken in by Florida police for possession of marijuana. For this felony charge, he was sentenced to one month in a juvenile detention center, followed by six months in a behavioral correction facility. In 2014, Onfroy went back to juvie for possession of a firearm. However, one of the most notorious incidents that XXXTentacion was involved with occurred in late 2016, when Onfroy stabbed his then-manager Dylan Turner in the stomach. Whether the stabbing is intentional is up for debate, especially considering the fact that Onfroy paid Turner’s medical bills and Turner dropped the charges against him. In July 2016, just a few days after he was bailed out of prison for the stabbing of Dylan Turner, Onfroy found himself in trouble again. This time, the crime was robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and home invasion.  In October, Onfroy posted a $10,000 bail and was awaiting trial when he was arrested again. This arrest was on the grounds of witness tampering, false imprisonment, and aggravated battery of a pregnant victim. The victim was his ex-girlfriend, Geneva Ayala. After pleading not guilty to prosecutors in December 2017, Onfroy was released from jail on house arrest. Once he was released from house arrest, a video appeared on social media that got Onfroy in trouble again. Not long after, Pitchfork leaked audio that caused more controversy surrounding Jahseh’s criminal charges.

XXXTentacion’s Death

On June 18, 2018, XXXTentacion was killed near a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. There were several witnesses at the scene, including one who described “Two dudes in ski masks” getting out of their car and accosting the rapper. The witnesses heard three shots. Onfroy was taken to a Broward county hospital after the shooting and pronounced dead. His death was announced on the same night by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, who identified the shooter as Michael Boatwright. It was later revealed that Jahseh’s murder happened during a robbery. The rapper’s attackers stole $50,000 dollars in cash before fleeing the scene. Four suspects have been arrested so far, but they are still awaiting trial as of 2021.  The rapper’s funeral took place on June 27, 2018. Guests at the service included Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, and Erykah Badu. The South Florida artist left a legacy as the best-selling emo rapper of all time. He’s been listed as an influence by several of the biggest musicians in the world, from Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar to Kanye West.
