Biography

Zain Javadd Malik, better known simply as ZAYN, is an English singer from Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Born on January 12, 1993, the 28-year-old musician is best known as a former member of the boy band One Direction, with whom he won third place on The X Factor in 2010. Malik had originally entered the show as a solo competitor, but he was grouped with fellow singers Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson by judge Simon Cowell to form One Direction.

Since his departure from the world-famous boy band, Zayn Malik has been releasing music as ZAYN. He put out his debut album as a solo artist in 2016, and it features the hit single “Pillowtalk,” a song that proved that Zayn could sustain a career in music on his own.

ZAYN is the recipient of numerous accolades, both for his solo music and his work with One Direction. He’s won an American Music Award for New Artist of the Year and a Billboard Music Award for Top New Artist, as well as many other honors.

Zayn's Early Life

Zayn is of Pakistani descent – his parents are Pakistani immigrant father Yaser and British mother, Trisha Brannan. He has one older sister named Doniya and two younger sisters named Safaa and Waliyha. Since reaching adulthood, Zayn has not identified with the Muslim faith of his family.  Zayn's family lived in East Bowling, Bradford, where Malik attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School. As a teenager, Zayn took an interest in performing arts and his father's music collection. He was intrigued by the sounds of his dad's R&B, hip-hop, and reggae records, which inspired him to start rapping. However, he ended up going after a degree in English in college, hoping to become a teacher.

Joining One Direction

17-year-old Malik auditioned for the talent show series The X Factor, encouraged by his mother. He auditioned with the song "Let Me Love You" by Mario, and his performance won the judges over. After making it to the final round of the competition, Zayn was eliminated – but that wasn't the end of the story. Zayn was paired with fellow competitors from The X Factor to form the group One Direction, who ended up taking home third place on that season of the show. The group was organized by judges Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger, and they went on to become an international sensation. Zayn performed with One Direction for five years, departing from the group in 2015. Following his split from the band, he shared that he wanted time away from the public eye to focus on living as a "normal 22-year-old."

Starting His Solo Career

In March of 2015, Zayn started working with producer Naughty Boy, another artist from The United Kingdom. The two collaborated on several tracks together, none of which were ever released. After collaborations with Naughty Boy, Rae Sremmurd, and others, Zayn shared that he had secured a solo recording contract with RCA Records, which distributed Mind of Mine, his debut solo album.

Mind of Mine

Mind of Mine was released on March 25, 2016, and several of the album's tracks became hits in England and abroad. The album debuted at number one in the UK and the US, and its most successful track was "Pillowtalk."  Many of Zayn's fans from his One Direction days hopped on board immediately when he started out as a solo performer, while others took more convincing. After the release of Mind of Mine, Zayn put out the single "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," a song that was featured on the soundtrack for the 2017 film Fifty Shades Darker

Icarus Falls

More singles followed "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," including "Still Got Time," a collaboration with PartyNextDoor, and "Dusk Till Dawn," featuring Sia. These singles were followed by the first tracks from Zayn's second album, Icarus Falls Released on December 14, 2018, Icarus Falls features some of Zayn's biggest hits to date, including "No Candle No Light," featuring Nicki Minaj and "Too Much," featuring Timbaland.

Nobody Is Listening

January 15, 2021, was the release date for Zayn's third album, Nobody Is Listening. Since its release, the album has gained over 300 million streams on Spotify, in large part thanks to the success of singles like "Better" and "Vibez."

Zayn's Personal Life

Zayn has shown his support for Palestine via his Twitter account in the past, with his tweets in support of the country earning him death threats from detractors on social media. Since 2015, Zayn has been in a relationship with model Gigi Hadid. The couple had their first child in September 2020.
